All that most drivers seem to know about this instrument is that the dial should remain at a definite point on the "charge" aide by day, and so long as this re mains steady at that point there is nothing wrong with the part of the car that this dlat seems to control.
In many cases, the only instru- ment watched by drivers seems to be the speedometer

The ammeter tells when a head- light is out. if there's a short circuit in the line, or when the generator has stopped function- ing.

on the charge side, telling the driver that the generator is sup-: plying the proper power and eharging the battery in prepara- tion for its next drainage.
Let one of the headlights go out, and the needle will show a slight Increase in the regular charging rate.
And it the generator fails, to: function altogether, the needle will jump over to the discharge side while the motor is running. warning the driver that the hat- tery is providing the juice that otherwise should be furnished by the 'generator.
