T
HE party's the thing this autumn. More formality everywhere, more hospitality. more leisure spent socially. It honestly looks as if you might have to multiply your usual party wardrobe by at least two, possibly three.
The type of gown you pick this year is entirely up to you. Of course it must have a 1930 look to it, and there is no question about what has a 1930 look and what dejectedly admits its 1929 vintage. Lines, length and general feeling stamp the new gowns as new.
If you are the kind of frivolous person who lightly fits hither and yan, you might try on some of the ruffled, frilled, founced or other fancity. conceived tulle or lace frocks. They are youth, romance, daintiness personified.
Most of them have long skirts, whether or not they are frilled, flounced or otherwise decorated. And most of them concentrate their fanciness where an older person could stand it least, right around the hipline. If you are young and slender and dainty, do go in for this type of youthful gown. You, and you alone, can wear it so that both you and it capitalize each other's charm.
If you are a matron, albeit young, you might desire to show the world that there is a bit of the tiren about you yet, though married. Supple satin, svelled and sophisticated in its cut and clinging grace, is then your metier,
CHOOSE either light colors or dark. There
should be no compromise on this point. Black and white are the outstanding first choices for this type of gown, and I am inclined to think that it you are very young, the all-white costume flaunts both your youth and your sophistication most effectively.
If you are tall and willowy and withal cherish a yen for glamorous romance, perhaps riding a white charger, you can express yourself in one of the new rich lame gowns, cut on: medieval lines. This period expresses both build and spirit.
Then, supposing that you are a very dignified matron, one who perhaps was went to flirt out-
rageously but desires now to show all former con- quests that such things are behind you, your gown should be of black velvet, or of rich red velvet, or perhaps velvet in that regal hue. Velvet, nevertheless. It has just the qualities you want.
Last, but not least, if you are a devoted sports "woman who hates to thed tweeds, even for an im- pressively formal and lavish dinner dance, you can have a gown in the long pleated or draped lines, of some rather staunch yet dainty material such as faille, flat crepe, gold or silver metal cloth which will establish your sports tastes.
I. A PERFECT costume for the dainty, but-
terfly little person who suddenly finds herself grown up is a delicate pale pink mousseline, de soic gown, clear to the floor all around, with the richest of delicate trim in the form of strass em broidery all around the hips on the slip under the gown and all around the neckline of the gown.
This gown has an unusual girdle arrangement, with big, butterfly bows at the side and across the back of the hipline, giving a quaint and pleasing new version of the old-time bustle. Only you who are young and slender should try it. It might make a sedate person look too sedate!
II. FOR wraps this winter, the longer length is by far the better. Party coats should come at least to the hipline.:
A white ermine, which might easily be dupli- cated in white lapin, utes its skins to give a striped effect that is exquisite. It has a split and curved hemline, which is at the hipline, with the back longer than the front. It curves up again at the closing.
The cuffs are curved and split also, and the collar is a regal shawl affair that can be turned up to hide the ears if the wintry air nips you.
III. IF you are the rather sedate young me
tron, flaunting your happily settled state.
an exceptional choice for you is a fluid black vel- yet gown with the new demi-sleeve, shown above, in the center.
It has the new Grecian silhouette, with a draped bodice, shirred hipline emphasizing the bloused drapery above, a square neckline and a cape back that is regally lined with silver cloth.
The skirt has fullness below the hipline and is slightly above shoe-tip length. The demi-sleeve is made in one with the bodice, which, heightens,.. the effect of the Grecian draperies...
With this, almost any jewels may be worn that give a bit of color. Carnelians, rubies, emeralds, turquoise, matrix. Pearls would be good, too.
IV. THE importance of lame for evening wraps should not be overlooked. Some of these are lined with velvet, others with satin,, with a little warm interlining.
The model above, at the right, illustrates how regal such a wrap is, and yet how practical. It is made of exquisite brocade, many soft browns and pinks and greens against gold. It has the new mousquetaire sleeve, with an unusual fullness across the elbow, falling like a flounce to the wrist. This jacket has the long hiplength which is so good this winter, and an exquisite collar of golden. dyed white fox.
VIF you are the young matron with a bit of the siren in you yet, the gown of your choice might well be the supple white satin gown below. at the left, showing the new body lines, a cut that emphasizes the curves and grace of its wearer.
This gown has an unusual neckline, a wide V with the narrowest of straps over the shoulder, and a very lowback decolletage. There is a pointed V yoke effect of the satin and the hipline is ex tremely light, with exaggerated fullness flowing" from a low hipline to ankle length all around.
The gown fastens up under the arm, so tight is it through the fitted portions There is a very nar row belt that lies in a little bow, across the front

The plainest of pumps of the same satin are an excellent choice for this outfit, and though you may wear some distinguished jewels, it is quite as cfective with nobe,
