A large number of guests were entertained at dinner on the ves- sel on Saturday, when Captain Dollar, in reminiscent mood, told of his reasons for not retiring at the age of 86 years, and spoke forcibly on the necessity of trade and commerce to a nation.

"Why don't I retire? Because of sheer determination to succeed and do things. I claim it would have been nothing short of a crime for me to havo retired when I reached the age of 60, because I have accomplished far more dur- ing the last 25 years of my life than I did before I reached my 60th birthday. The opportunity came, five years later, when, curiously enough, both he and happened to be in Shanghai, and we were both in- vited to address the students of a Commercial College on the same day. My friendly contact with him in that year has since ripened into a friendship I greatly value. Not Many Changes. It was two and a half years ago since Captain Dollar had been in Hongkong and he had not noticed very many changes. The harbour appeared quiet that morning.

Captain Dollar said that four new Dollar line ships were to be launched shortly. One. would be ready in December. another in February, while plans had been drawn for the other two. They would have a tonnage of approxi- mately 17,000 and would be used on the Pacific route.

"Shanghai is going ahead much quicker than Hongkong," declared Captain Dollar. "I knew there was a good deal of building going on but I did not know it was pro- ceeding so fast. It seems to me it is going on a little too fast. There is a great future in front of Shanghai. It will be a big city.
