PRESIDENT'S APPEAL FOR MORE SUPPORT.

In a recent bronicast address ou the work of the Hongkong Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Mr. John Russell. the

President, made an earnest appeal Its not Bear Brand

for more support.

He began by pointing out how the Society, founded in 1009. was resuscitated in 1991 and how active interest had been shown by Si Robert and Lady Ho Tung. Sir Henry and Lady Pollock, and othersi lis Excellency the Gov ernor has recently consented to be come Patron of the Society. Two European Inspectors are employed who work in close co-operation with the Police and the Sanitary Departurent markets are patrol! ed: bird shops and landing places

la always absolutely uniform, safe and puret

visited; the Dog's Homie at Kow: BEAR "BRAND" `MILK loon (endowed by Sir Robert and Lady Ho Tung) is managed; casny competitions are held among Boy Scouts and Girl Guides; and, generally, an educative influence is exercised among all who have to handle live-stock.

Mr. Russell pointed out that, "a Society such as the S.P.C.A. must work along lines that may Seem to many people to have for its sole object the punishment of those who cruelly ill-treat animints, but that is not the purpose of the Society, Our endeavours are main- ly preventative and educational. and we recognise that it is much more salutary to check ahnsen by teaching lies how to handle animals humanely than to resort to proaccutions.in the Police Courts. Infortunately, the work that in done in this direction gains little or no publicity, and a considerable the rtion of the population of Colony seems to be unware of the good work that is being done by the loent Society far the even tion of Cruelty to Animals. We want your assistance, we want to draw your attention to much need- less cruelty, so that you also, will. be a worker. Even a word to a coolid, or a talk to a child, may do a lot of good and teach then not to be cruel, and try to prevent We agree cruelty among others. that animals which ALG being reared, and sold, for market poses, cannot be housed, cared for, and fed, similar to our domestic pets, but I am sure you will all agree that much good can be done by instructing those who have the care if animals to adopt all ren- sonable pracutions while animals are in their charge."

In appealing for much-needed additional support. Mr. Russell

ly Beck your help, and if you have any ideas or suggestions to make we will be very pleased if you will come along to our Annual Meeting and thereby assist us in this good work. Should you desire to become a member of the Society a note to nur Secretary, together with your fee of 82, will enable you to take part in all our activities. l'osters have been printed in English and Chinese with the names of our Sec- retary and Treasurer and Inspectors, and they are now displayed t various prominent plates througir but the Colony. This is just an appeal to your sympathy on half of those to whom we are
