Look at an Ordnance Survey map, pick out almost any patch of ruler-straight road and you will almost certainly find that the Ordnance people have kindly label- led it "Watling Street" or "Stane Street," or "Roman Road"; and then you must try to connect up the patches which are still our highways by the portions which have vanished as roads and are only indicated by names of Roman origin.
The Pilgrims' Way is a trickier task, because it is as crooked as a lor's hind leg; but you will find patches of it named near Redhill and Canterbury and can trace some of the missing portions if you remember the then undrained land of the lower levels made travel over them difficult, and the Way wanders curving along the sides or crests of the borderings slopes.

Keeping this in mind, and watch- ing out for auch names 38 tigious minded pilgrims would have used or bestowed. you map-travel quite a lot of the Way. and perhaps some day, make "hike" over it yourself.
