Evidence given by a fisherman was to the effect that the deceased was following another girl when she vanished beneath the wheels of the bus, which had overtaken them from the direction of Hongkong.

A barber returning to his shop at Aberdeen on the bus, said the vehicle swerved to the right-hand side of the road and grazed the wall of the Dockyard. He next felt a bump and the rear of the bus went up. He then saw a life- less body lying ten feet behind the vehicle.

The conductor of the bus de clared that the horn was sounded immediately before the vehicle swerved.

Brakes Not in Order.

Acting Sub-Inspector S. C. Saunders testified that the foot brake was not in good working order when he tested it after the

accident.

On going over the scene of the accident. he discovered a long wheel mark curving, for a distance of 50 feet, from the centre of the road to the Dockyard wall. then out again until it ended within four feet of the spot where the girl was lying. There were marks on the gutter and on the wall where the bus had grazed it.

The Coroner: On those marks, apart from the evidence given, can you deduce anything as to the cause of the accident?

Sub-Inspector Saunders: J should say he swerved first to avoid i the girl. The buses are fitted with life-guards between the front and back wheels on either side. This made it impossible for anyone struck down to get under the bus From the side. If deceased was run over by this bus; she must have been knocked down by the front and got under it between the two front wheels, or else she had been run over by one of the front wheels. It was quite possible she had been dragged some distance before being run over.

He was a member of the Ger- man Chamber of Commerce and the German Clubs in Shanghai. Generous, hard-working, courage- ous, his personality and character won him a host of friends who will mourn his passing. He had been ill for a considerable time before he left Shanghai but it was not until last March that he ceased his strenuous duties to rest. He leaves behind him his widow and a brother, both in Germany. Frau Rust accompanied her husband on his recent voyage home.

pulled up 20 feet short of the spot where he found the body lying. He thought the bus was at the time travelling at 18 miles at least, The opinion he formed was that the two girls were dodging about, and that the driver after avoiding one of them, recovered, and then knocked down the other girl.

Driver's Record,

The driver's record was

duce, and it was shown that he had eight convictions since 1926, two of these being for dangerous driving and two for negligent driv- ing.

I must warn under the circumstances that your only safe verdict is an open verdict: that we find this girl so knocked down by a motor-bus in circum- stances which we cannot exactly pro-determine.
