A New York chemist, on the top floor of a five-story building, sought a formula for vanilla extract. An explosion of his heating vat tore part of the side wall and roof from the taller building in the background and sent the debris crashing down on to the smaller structure below. A 19- year-old boy was killed; six persons were seriously injured.
