DOOMED TO FIGHT A GALLANT LOSING BATTLE.
DEFENDER'S TACTICS.
In a gallant losing battle, after being out-manoeuvred at the commencement, Shamrock V, Sir Thomas Lipton's
challenger for the America's 'Cup, was beaten yesterday by three miles, by the American defender Enterprise, a picture of which appears on the right. The Enterprise obtained a position by which its huge mainsail took the breeze and the Shamrock was practically doomed from the 'start.
This is the second defeat of the Shamrock, in succession, and as the contest is for the best of seven races, the challenger will have to win four out of the remaining five if the Cup is to be "lifted".
In view of the Enterprise's two victories, the chances of Sir Thomas Lipton succeeding in regaining the trophy appear to be
remote. The Enterprise has proved to be the speedier boat, and won yesterday by such a convincing margin as to leave little doubt that she can retain the Cup.
