LACK OF MATTING.
Ten Chinese pig dealers were charged before Mr. Whyte Smith at Kowloon this morning with cruelty to pigs, Mr. Leo D'Almada, sar.. appearing for the defence, tendered a plea of guilty.
In extenuation .Mr. D'Almada aaid the alleged cruelty took place about two days before the harvest festivities. It WAS customary, before pigs were taken to be sold, to put them in crates with matting and straw, but in this particular case, owing to the crush, either the fokis had not put in sufficient matting and straw or the suppliers had not given sufficient to be put into the crates. The defendants themselves did not have anything to do with this, all arrangements being left in the hands of the fokis.
