The Coroner stated that the boy was knocked down at the junction of Pedder Street and Des Voeux Road Central on September 1, and died as a result of injuries received from being 80 knocked down by public car No. 506.

"You will And, I imagine," said his Worship, addressing the jury, "from the statements supplied to me by the Police that there is sharp conflict of evidence here as to responsibility for the accident. It is within, your proy.nce to deter mine whether the driver of the car was criminally responsible for the death so caused."

The medical testimony was to the effect that death was due to haemorrhage and shock as a result of injuries, which were consistent with the deceased having been violently knocked down.

An Indian. constable on duty at the junction, deposed that he saw the car approach the junction from the direction of the City Hall, along Des Voeux Road, at a faster speed than was usual. The rate must have been about 20 railes an hour. The road at that time was clear of other motor traffic. A Chinese lad, about 6 or 7 years, had started to cross the road from Jardine's corner to the General Post Office Building. He did not seem to bave seen the car, and had started out for about three yards from Jarding's corner, walking slowly, when he was knocked down.

-The driver, declared witness, did not sound his horn, and the car kept straight on all the way with out swerving at any time. It ap- peared to witness that at the rate the vehicle was going, it could not have been pulled up in time to avoid an accident. The left front of the vehicle struck the boy in the chest and he was knocked down and

Our Society is not endowed with any funds; it is not receipt of any Government, grant. It depends entirely upon the subscription of members for its existence and for organizing and staging the beautiful exhibits each spring in each year.

The $5 from each member may appear a trifling amount, but when added together in tens and hundreds, they make an amount substantial enough to ensure the continued existence of the Society,. which is now a very precarious one.

The Prosecution's Story. Inspector Murphy outlining the case, said that the first and second defendants had brought a small girl from Chinese territory and the first, fourth and fifth defen- dants had sold that girl to the third defendant while the sixth defendant, who was discharged, had only acted as a "go between"

On August 11, Sergeant Hum- phreys went on board the S. S. Antung lying in harbour, and while he was examining the pas sengers his attention was drawn to the first and third defendants, who were seated with the girl be tween them. He questioned them and not being satisfied with their answers he brought them ashore and informed the S.C.A, Acting on the information of the third de- fendant, he (Mr. Murphy), went to 932 Canton Road, of which the fourth defendant was the tenant.
