and a desire to get back to Canada, were the reasons put forward by a Canadian, Ian Thompson Bowers, who was charged before Mr. Whyte Smith at the Kowloon Magistracy this morning with having stowed away on the President Madison from Manila.

"The defendant has been all over the world and has been having quite- a good time," said Detective Ser- geant Kellet. "He left Vancouver in October last and has been to England, India

and Singapore. From the last named place he stow- ed away to Manila. But this is the first time he has got into serious trouble."

The bland assertion in the

Yale Daily News, a paper pablished by undergraduates at the Univer sits during term time, that one half of the Yale undergraduates are guilty of cheating at examina- tions, has provided a new variant to the theme of "What is Wrong with Modern Youth?"

The matter was made moro serious by the further assertion) of the undergraduate publication that the offence was not regarded as a serious one by the students. The charge was not made that in competitions for special College prizes cheating was indulged in; but that when it was a question of "getting through" to secure a degree the student looked upon the examination as a game in which a little outside aid wis perfectly legitimate.

Cheating at the American Uni- versities is not a new problem. An attempt to solve it was made at the majority of Colleges by the institution of the "Honour" 878- tem, under which each under- graduate pledged himself "on his honour" not to cheat. In addition any student caught in the act was "sent down" by the College thorities.

Au-

Not a Social Outcast.

The system appears to have been only partially successful. College students from a number of institutions have admitted that cheating regularly goes on, though' they considered that the 50 per cent. estimate of the Yale News was probably an exaggeration. They also confirmed the statement that the cheat would not be re- garded in any way as 'n social out- cast in the undergraduate world for what he had done.

Newspapers which comment on the problem lay the blame on the moral training of the rising gen-

eration. But some blame might reasonably be attached to the mat-
