THE LOK MA CHAU

TRAGEDY.

POLICE OFFICERS EXPLAIN WHY ATTACK WAS DELAYED.

FURTHER EVIDENCE.

Two important Police witnesses were called at the resumed inquiry into the circumstances of the Lak Ma Chau tragedy, before 'Mr. Lindsell yesterday afternoon, these being Mr. W. La Bart Sparrow, A.S.P. in charge of the New Territories, and Mr. D. Bur lingham, Divisional Superinten. dent for the mainland.

Inspector Brennan, Divisional In. spector of the New Territories, re- sumed his evidence and stated that when he arrived at the pathway at the bottom of the hillside at Lok Ma Chau he met Sub-In- spector O'Connor and Sergeant McEwan. They informed him of what had occurred and then Ser geant Baysting, who was there,

Was

detailed to proceed to the North of the Station and take up position there with the Thompson gun. Witness himself went to the hill between the footpath and the main road.

On reaching the top witness turn- ed his glasses on the station but could see no sign of any movement. He was afterwards joined by the Assistant Superintendent of Police for the New Territories. (Mr. W. la Bart Sparrow), when it was de cided that men should be detailed to remain at the top of the hill where they then were, while witness returned to the ridge. He then went into the valley on the south of the station and again failed to see movement on the back

any verandah.

Witness then returned to the A.S.P., N.T. and after reporting to him, stated that he wished to get to the hill on the East side of the Station where he could see into the married quarters. The Super- intendent decided to accompany him. The two then climbed up the ridge, this being at about 7.10 p.m. It was then that witness heard an outburst of rifle shots, resembling an exchange of fire between the Station and the married quarters.

In reply to the Coroner witness intimated that he had previously heard an outburst of rifle shooting. This was when he first arrived and was speaking to S. I. O'Connor and Sgt. MeEwan.
