FREE-WHEELING.

Experiments Carried Out in U.S.

SAVING FUEL.

During the past few years freefl wheels have been tried to a con- siderable extent in England and on the Continent, but American en- gineers have taken very little interest in such mechanisms, Con- sequently, it is worthy of note that quite recently an ingenious form of free wheel has been developed by the L.G.S. Manufacturing Co. of Indianapolis. This concern has fit- ted up a Model A Ford with the mechanism in question and has been giving demonstration runs which have created considerable interest.

It has been stated in the Ameri- can Press that these demonstrations have shown a fuel economy varying from 15 per cent. to 25 per cent. (due to toasting), exceptional case of gear changing without the neces- sity for declutching, a reduction in the consumption of oil and the rate of formation of carbon, and an increase in the life of the engine.

There are two cylindrical parts fitting together to form a circular box, one being driven from the main gearshaft, while the other is posi- tively connected to the propeller shaft. Within the box, and fitting closely against the interior surfaces. there is a closely wound coil spring ground externally 80-as-to make good contact. At one end this spring is pegged to the driving member.

The normal direction of rotation of the engine is such as to tend to unwind the spring, which is there- by slightly expanded into very tight frictional contact with the eur- rounding casing, consequently transmitting the drive without any slip: If the throttle be closed while the car is in motion, however, the reversal of the drive contracts the spring and allows free wheeling to take place.

It is stated that the frictional effect is, cumulative, so that quite a amall spring is well able to trans- mit the drive without slipping. On the Ford car to which we have al ready referred, for example, the spring is only 2% ins, in diameter, and is but 2 ins. long. Wear is slight as the device works in oil

In order to provide for emergency conditions when it might be desir. able that the car should be able to drive the engine (and also for re- veraing, incidentally) a locking lever is arranged to operate dogs... The "Motor."

POWERFUL, Yes

and with this power, big car design that assures long life.

Many thousands of Pontiacs have been bought primarily on the spec- tacular performance of this luxurious car! Owners of costlier cars are amazed at the ease and speed with which Pontiace pass them on steep bills and level stretches,'

You'll find other powerful care-you'll find other fast cars-but you'll find too that most of them lose their sparkling performance after 10,000 miles.

Pontiac's power is built into the engine to last! When many other cars begin to wear and need overhauling Pontiac is at its zenithfull of virile performance whether the throttle calls for speed or power. Its parts are made from finest quality big-oer formula metals-fitted to fine, exsot clearancos-tested and proved.

If you are contemplating buying another big car-take a ride in the new Pontiac Big Bix. You too will agree that you get big-car value st less cost to buy and maintain.
