When the County Council Educa-of Hillingdon tion Committee reported that they Essex "saw no reason for prohibiting the formation of Cadet Corps in the Council schools," Mr. L. Silkin said a Cadet Corps was an avenue to a military career, and many objected to their boys being induced to fol- low such a carcer.

The Education Committee re-

should be made to London Univer- sity, whereupon Mr. C. R. Simpson (Labour) moved that the amount be reduced by £100 "because part of the money will be used for the training of officers for the Army."

"Legalised Butchers,”

The Rev. A. G. Prichard (La- bour) said: "I loathe the O.T.C. I detest and hate and abominate it, After our experience in the war, to promote this policy is a shame and a scandal on the part of the London County Council,"

Mr. W. H. Green said that to introduce the 0.T.C. into an educa. tional question was "a degradation of all that made for education. It is allowing money for the training of legalised butchers of the future."

Judge Tobin: I really do not want this lady to go to prison, but she seems to be forcing me to send her there. What can I do? Can you pay this to-day?

Lady Adare: Yes, I can.

Judge Tobin: Well then, if you pay it and apologise for the con. tempt, I will consider most favour ably an application for your dis- charge.

A little later it was announced she had paid the debt and costs.

Judge Tobin: Very well. It only remains for me to deal with the contempt of court. What have you to say, Lady Adare?

Lady Adare: I am extremely, Aorry, and apologise. I have not been very well, and I never realis- ed, the position.

After remarking that she treat- ed the matter in a very flippant way indeed, Judge Tobin said:

It is a very half-hearted apology, and I gravely doubt whether it is in the least bit an earnest apology I do not trust what she says one little bit.

There is this one thing to be said, perhaps in her favour, that she does not seem to have any friend to advise her. She has come along without a single soul.

As there is no friend to help and advise her, and aimply be- cause she is a woman without ap- parently a friend to stand by her in open court, I have taken, most reluctantly a very lenient course.

No doubt she has been criticised by people who read newspaper re- ports describing her conduct, and I should have thought that a sen- sitive person might have suffered a good deal of pain thereby.

I doubt, judging from her con- duct here, whether she has suf- fered any pain at all. I wonder whether she was really laughing at the Court.

She has been to the expense and trouble of coming here and she. has paid the debt in full. In these circumstances I very reluctantly discharge the order I made and she may go.
