OBITUARY.

DEATH OF SCREEN STAR LON CHANEY.

Los Angeles, Aug. 26. The death has occurred of the film atar, Lon Chaney. Reuter's American Service,

Lon Chaney was born on April 1. 1883, at Colorado Springs. He started life as a contortionist in a circus, and later took to the films, his arst picture being "The Miracle Man." He soon became known as

News was received by cable yesterday of the death, at Shang- hal, of Mr. W. Gardner, the superintendent of the Hongkong Rope Manufacturing Company, Lid. The deceased had gone North on holiday, about a month ago.

Tokyo, Aug. 25. Mr. Hamaguchị, Beròn Shide- hara and Admiral Takarube again appeared before the Privy Council examination committee, and an- swered questions relating to the London Naval Treaty.

Baron Shidehara explained the diplomatic background, as to which Viscount Kentaro Kaneko was the chief questioner.

General Misao Kawai (retired) led a grilling examination on the technical naval aspects, Admiral Takarabe replying.

It is authoritatively stated that several similar sessions are likely before the Treaty will be reported to the whole Privy Council.→ Reuter.
