SATURDAY,

SAVING THEIR FACES!
At the resumption of the enquiry into the Lok Ma Chau tragedy yesterday afternoon, the Coroner had occasion further to refer to the conduct of the Indian force attached to the Station dur- ing the tragedy.
- How did you get that impres sion7-3722 (the station guard) told me when he returned from the charge room after sending the telephone message that the Lewis gun was not there.
You went there yourself? Yes, and I also saw that the Lewis gun was not there.
Then you were afraid, in fact?- If he had the Lewis gun 50 or 60 men would not have been able to overpower him. (
He was not one of the Lewis gun team, was bot-No, but he knew a little.,
Was B315 one of the team I---
The Indian sergeant, Jewan Singh, was the first witness called when the inquiry was resumed, the that he had witness mentioning been on duty from the night pre-Yes. vlous to the tragedy to the early Did he make any attempt to get morning and at 3 p.m. he had gone the Lewis gun when the alarm to sleep. He did not awaken until went? Yes, he went to the charge aroused by the Station Guard, even room to
get it, but it was not though the alarm was going and there. shots were being fired.
On learning of the shooting wit ness obtained his rifle and manned the barrack rom door opposite to the charge room, this being his post in the event of an emergency The others were all ordered to go to their alarm posts, but the sta tion guard, although he should have wone to the charge room, disobeyed the order.
The Coroner: He deliberately disobeyed your order?
Witness: He might not have heard it.
You did not repeat it then?---- No.
Did you see anyone go into the charge room?-No.
Then how do you suggest that the B543 was able to go into charge room and take a Lewis gun unobserved?-In my opinion he might have taken it before the shooting started.
No one else would like to think that except you, trying to save your own face. It is impossible!
Firing at Nothing. Continuing, the witness said that they had fired 25 shots although they did not see anything at which to fire.
Coroner: Whatever good would that do? We could not see any target. We fired when we heard & shot.
What good would that do, do you think, to let off your rifle when Can someone shoot? you heard you suggest any good that that could possibly do?-1 cannot ex- plain that.
He went immediately after be was aroused? Yes.
He told you the Lewis gun was not there? Yes.
Then why did you mention B722 frat?-He was the first to tell me about the Lewis gun.
Too Much Firing.
Then, on your own showing B315 did not go on his job until 15 min utes later? He went immediately after he was aroused, but he did not tell me of the Lewis gun until 15 minutes later.
How in the world can you ex- pect anyone to believe that!
Did you believe, in fact that B543 could fire a Lewis gun?--Yes. Did you hear the sound of machine gun fire?-No.
About 7.30 you vacated the bar rack room? Yes.
What led to that?-As there was too much firing outside, I peeped And through the west window shouted: "Don't fire
into the ground floor, some of us here might wet hit!" Then Romeone at the other side shouted: "Mr. Sparrow says to come out if you can!”,
What do you mean "if you can?" I don't know, those were the words used.
Then you made your way out one by one to the compound through the door by the kitchen?—Yes.
Did you see B9 dead?-Yes, he was just outside the door.
You knew at the beginning that he was shot? Yes.
Yet for two hours and a half you made no effort to assist him?
There was too much firing out- side and if anyone went out he would have been hit.
You admit yourself that you
