FORGED BANK NOTE. CONSIGNEES NOTICES. CONSIGNEES' NOTICES.

TWO CHINESE CHARGED

on the

WITH POSSESSION,

Two Chinese, Cheung Tak and Ching King, were charged before Mr. Whyte Smith yesterday after- noon with having in their posses sion a forged $100 note Hongkong and Shanghai Bank.

Both pleaded not guilty. Th first defendant said that he had picked up the note in the street and had taken it to a friend of his who suggested that he shoud sell it to his master, who was in the habit of buying forged notes, After he had sold the note and when he was leaving the house he was arrested. The second defen- dant denied all knowledge of the note.

Detective Sergeant Meadows, prosecuting, said that on August 4 a man named Chang Chow re ceived information from his foki that the first defendant was trying to sell a forged $100 note. The in- formant Chang Chow was well known to the police, and he was instructed to buy the note from the first defendant. The trans action took place and when the de- fendant was leaving the house he was arrested. The defendant then said he had been given the note by another man and conducted the police to Shanghai Street where the second defendant was arrested.

That the note was a forgery was deposed to by Mr. G. W. E. True of the Hongkong and Shanghai 'Bank. He said that even to the practised eye it was quite a good forgery. The general appearance and the tracing were, however, more crude than in the original note. It had also got an oily feel- ins, and the hill behind the ship, which was in the origina! note, was not found in the forgery. The figures $100 were also one fourth of an inch shorter than in the original.

The Trap.

Chang Chow then gave evidence with regard to the buying of the note from the first defendant. He said that he had spoken to a Chin- ese detective about it and had been instructed to buy it from the de- fendant. The detective supplied him with the money wherewith to buy the note. He paid $35 for the note and agreed to pay a further $3 the next day. The defendant was arrested by the detective when he left the house.

The foki, Cheung Pak, also gave

evidence.

The defendant: Did I not tell you that I had picked the note up

in the street?—No.

Did I not say that I did not know whether the note was a genuine or a false one?--You said it was a forged note.

The Chinese detective then bore out the arrest of the defendant. Regarding the second defendant, he said that on the statement of the | first defendant he went with him

defendant cumé out of a house and asked the first defendant "Well what about it; have you lone it?"

The Magistrate discharged the second defendant, and sentenced the first defendant to four months' hard labour, remarking that it, was a very serious case because, al- though he did not utter a note, he tried to sell it. It meant that somebody else was going to utter it later.
