TEAM WORK WHICH FAILED

THROUGH BUNGLING.

How two pickpockets were f thwarted in an endeavour to rob a pedestrian in Queen's Road West on Saturday last was told to the Magis. trate (Mr. H. R. Butters). before. whom the men were charged, at the Central Police Court yesterday afternoon.

It was stated that they excited district the suspicions of two watchmen by continually peeping into the pockets of pedestrians as they walked along. Keeping them. under observation, the watchmen were able to give a detailed: story of how, finally, the suspects were much attracted to a man wearing a white jacket and pair of black trousers and a topee, and fixed on him as a possible victim.

After holding a hurried consulta- tion the suspects ranged themselves, one on either side of the intended victim, and embarked on what was to have been a deft operation with Ta handkerchief masking the move- ments of the fingers. Unfortunate- Warned, ly, they bungled the task. the pedestrian instinctively tucked his arms across his breast, and having thus effectively protected his breast pocket, looked round for the thieves. These latter

im mediately turned tail and fled, being followed by the watchmen and seized after a chase over several blocks.

Both prisoners were convicted by Mr. Butters, and sentenced to six weeks' hard labour.

Inspector John Murphy, prosecut- ing, also preferred a charge of disobeying an order of banishment, against the second prisoner.

Convicted on two occasions similar offences, the prisoner, the Inspector stated, was expelled,

after serving his last sentence in 1927, for a period of ten years. He returned to the. Colony the fol- lowing year and was then sentenc- ed to nine months' hard labour and ordered to be whipped.

He now received a further term of nine months' hard labour in ad- dition to the sentence inflicted on the charge of attempted larceny, and was also ordered to receive 24 strokes of the birch.

His Worship indicated that there was no evidence of intent to sell the woman for the purposes of pro- stitution. In trying to marry her as a concubine the men were per- haps doing her a good turn.

Inspector Murphy replied that they were apparently charitable people. They must have been endowed with the virtue of charity. His Worship intimated that the men could not be convicted for that.

After hearing the evidence the woman his Worship remarked that there was no proof that the defendants had detained her with the intention of selling her for pro- stitution and discharged them.
