THE POWERS AND THE NAVAL TREATY.

The London Naval Treaty is likely to figure largely in the news'

of the next few days. In Washing tor, a special session of the Senata is busy discussing the document, with a view to deciding whether or not it shall be ratified, whilst a Bill has just been introduced in the House of Commons to enable Britain to give effect to the under standing. The ratification issue will in due course come before the Japanese Diet as well. Whilst we may expect a good deal of wordy warfare on the subject in all three countries, there is little room for doubting that the Treaty will be endorsed, although the opposition to it in some quarters is very marked. Indeed, the "scare" tactics of some politicians in this matter leave us wondering whether they place any rellance whatever in the sincerity of practically all the nations of the world who have subscribed to the No War Fact.

AJAX.

There were two heroes called Ajax at the battle of Troy-Ajax the Greater, who was second only to Achilles in valeur, and Ajax the Less who is even better known than his namesake by reason of his folly in defying the light- ning.

It Happened like this:- When Troy town was captured by the Greeks at the end of their ten years' seige," "the blood of the conquerors · ran wild, and in the general law lessness that followed, Ajax the Less offered violence to Cassandra, a Trojan nobles

woman,

This action brought upon him the punishment of the gods, who destroyed his ship -in a storm. Ajax swam to,a. rock, and said that he was safe, whatever the famortala might do, scoffing at the light- ning which played around him. This so enraged Nep tune that he directed thé, lightning to the rock, which was amashed to pieces, and Ajax, falling into the sea, was drowned.

The term "Ajax defying the lightning" is applied nowadays to anybody whợ nets as though he were immuno from dangers beyond the control of man to avert.
