This was announced at a meet- ing held at the Mansion House, when a public appeal was launch- ed for £250,000, $130,000 of which has already been promised.

"Oxford is not the only univer- sity to which Dominion students come," said Mr. L. S. Amery, who deputised for Mr. Stanley Baldwin. "A very much larger number. study in London, but for these students there is in London at present no corporate college life."

The object of establishing the fund, he explained, was to build a great hall and common rooms, us- ing existing buildings on the sito. to provide temporary accommoda-

On the occasion of the French National Fete, the anniversary of the taking of the Bastille in 1879, the French. Consul, M. Dufaure de la Prade, held an official reception at his residence, Victoria Lodge, Peak Road, at 11.30 this morning. There was a convivial gathering which included the Colonial Secretary (Hon. Mr. E R. Halli- fax), H.E. the General Officer Commanding (Major-General J. W. Sandilands), Rear-Admira! R. A S. Hill, the Inspector General of Police (Hon. Mr. E. D. C. Wolfe, C.M.G.), the Attorney General (Hon. Mr. G. C. Aļabas- ter), Bishop Valtorta, Mon- seigneur Deswazieres, members of the Consular Body, Hon. Sie Shouson Chow, Hon. Mr. R. H. Kotewall, Hon. Mr. S. W. Tao, Dr. Shanghai and Europe via Siberia

The French Consul gaye, the toast of "The. King,” and"Major- General Sandilands in turn gave the toast of the President of the French Republic.

After the toasts had been honoured, M. Dufaure de la Prade, in a short speech, said that many people viewed the Fete of July the Fourteenth as merely signifying the fall of the Bastille in the First Revolution, but the importance of the day for French citizens went much further than that, as it was not until within the next year following the fall of the Bas tille, that the work of unifica- tion of the provinces, then in a state of anarchy, was completed. So that when they celebrated the anniversary in the next year, 1880 it marked also the federation of the different provinces into the
