According to Inspector Elston, Mr. Morgan missed a puppy from his house on Monday last and the following day he lost its mother. According to the Police, it was raining heavily at the time, and when Sergeant Roberts tested the car he found the brakes in good working order.
Mr. R. L. Phillips said that he was returning from the Kowloon Railway Station at 7.45 p.m. on May 11, and when passing the Po Hing Theatre he suddenly felt an impact of something having been struck. He saw the legs of a man as the person fell over the mud-guard and into the readway, striking his head on the ground.
Witness intimated that it was raining heavily at the time, and he did not see the man before the ac- cident. He pointed cut that he was unable to see any great distance ahead because of the rain and the dazzling of the lights.

BY-ELECTION ON FREE TRADE ISSUE.
London, July 10.
The officer mentioned that the first defendant was arrested on the spot, the others, running away, while the second was subsequently arrested on the information of the first. Mr. Morgan would possibly be able to tell his Worship that he recognised the second defendant.
In evidence, Mr. Morgan said that the coolies were engaged behind his residence, and for them to re- turn to their shed it would be necessary for them to pass his house.
He remarked that owing to the steepness of the hillside it was impossible for a small puppy to have gone to the shed of its own accord. He recognised second de- fendant as having been present at the shed.
The defendants, in their defence, stated that two other fokia had found the dog dead on the road- way, and had taken it to the shed to be cleaned for consumption.
