At the intersection of Nathan and Prince Edward Ronds, the electric traffic sign is more of a source of danger than an aid to safety, for the simple reason that the green light does not operate as a through signal, but is permit-the hole, as this may prevent air
from entering the tank, or, worse;

Motor. Ambulances,
Automotive transportation has set a new standard of efficiency, in various forms of public service, one of the most valuable being ambulance and first-aid systems. Few cities to-day are without a motor ambulance service, and so universal has the demand become, that many manufacturers specia- lise in such vehicles. It seems scarcely necessary to mention that the, great value of a motor ambulance is that it can be driven rapidly to the scene of an accident in the shortest possible time. Last week's incident therefore, when over half an hour elapsed before an ambulance reached the Gloucester Building, is a matter

SHIFTING
GEARS ON PLANE.
By means of a staggered propeller, Invented by Bert Hawkins, left, and Gordon Sackett of Santa Barbara, Calif, it is now possible to "change gears" on an airplane while in fight and alter, the propeller's pitch. This gear shifting is said to save motor labour by cutting ita revolutions to nearly half, and to allow about one-third greater speed. A closeup of the gears of the propeller is shown above.
"LOOK BOTH
WAYS.”
Wanted
Safety-First Campaign
in Hongkong.
A well-known local motorist has suggested that we plead for the inauguration of a "Safety-First" cainpaign, stressing the advisability of adopting the slogan “Look Both Ways." The idea 'is an excellent one, and has been employed in most progressive cities where traffic is heavy. So general is the practice among Chinese of aimlessly wandering across busy thoroughfares regardless of oncoming traffic, that motorists frequently express the opinion that it would be impossible to check it, but we do not subscribe to that view. That the problem is a difficult one cannot be denied, but an intensive campaign beginning with the schools, would surely have the effect of lessening the danger. Suitable diagrams should be employed, and at all busy intersections, signs should be erected giving the injunction "Look Both Ways" in English and Chinese.
We should like to see the suggestion adopted, because in the interest of public safety, it is clearly indicated that Hongkong does need an energetic campaign to this end.
