Studies Life, Not the Theatre.

The man who wrote the Pulitzar Prize play rarely attends the theatre..

Nor does Elmer Rice have friends among theatrical folk. He belleves that watching life will be vastly more valuable to a play wright thaa watching other people's plays. And he feels un- comfortable among stage figures. He runs at the very mention of celebrities and is to be found-if ever found in public-in small groups of writers or sitting quietly at a concert.

Also he has had the unique ex- perience of seeing, in a single sea.. son, one of his plays become the outstanding American success of the season and another fail dis- mally in an out-of-the-way little. theatre.

While "Street Scene," the prize winner, was playing uptown, a little group resurrected "Subway," which he wrote a couple of years ago and was unable to sell. Rice believes "Subway" to be a play of considerable importance, yet he never was able to get a producer interested in it.
