• GOVERNOR OPENS FLYING CLUB.

ITS VALUE IN TIME OF STRESS.

Sir William Peel's presence at the Kai Tak aerodrome on Satur day afternoon was more than just formally to open the new club house of the Hongkong Flying Club. It was an official recogni- tion by the Government of the Club's value to the colony and an acceptance of its offer to place its members at the disposal of the Government in time of stress.

KOWLOON ENJOYS FINE- PROGRAMME.

Making their first really important Dublia appearance on Saturday evening, when they entertained several hundred Kowloon residents at the K.C.C., the Kai-Tak Follies scored a big success, sending away, at the conclusion of a varied pro- gramine, an enthusiastic and happy audience, who were hoping that it would not be the last occasion they would have of enjoying the op portunity of listening to this talent- "Field Cottage” as the clubed company. house is known is on the aero- From the opening number of the drome Itself just outside Kowloon Aeros Dance Band, the whole pro

The party introduced, "themselves with a pleasing lyrical number, and were followed by Tower and Co., who gave a snappy" interpretation of the big song hit "Breakaway."

Cox. Talbort and Muirhead then endeavoured to put the audience in good humour with everything and everybody, with some amusing back chat dealing with fox hunting, and in this quest, were remarkably successful, the item being voci ferously received.

Sir William and Lady Peel were met at the aerodroms by Wing Commodore the Hon. Mr. W. E. Shenton, Major General J. W. Sandilands, the Hon. Mr. W.-T. Southorn and Rear Admiral R. A. S. Hill, while Misa Bunty Forbes presented Lady Peel with a bouquet.

Government Grant,

"As you all know, the Govern- ment receives many applications for financial help from the public purse which unfortunately does not possess the characteristics of the widow's cruse. It is obvious that a great number of these ap- plications must be turned down, but I am sure that we are all cer- tain that the initial grant of $60,000 and an annual subsidy of $30,000 to the club by the Govern ment is more than justified.

"One of the main objects of the club is to train pilots and gineers and to take as members all nationalities. Each member on joining undertakes to place his services at the disposal of the Government in time of stress, This is still more evidence of the unity and loyalty of the people of Hongkong.

Doing a Good Turn." "There are many phases of Ay- ing. First there is the joyous sporting spirit and the desire for pace which seems to be so much in evidence to-day. Perhaps at the risk of being called an old fogey I sometimes wonder if we shall soon all be going too fast, when the Americans will say that it will be the cutest thing to go round in bathchairs and play croquet polo.

The first half of the prograinme concluded with songs by A.E. Cox, G. Stretton and C. Tower, and an extremely funny dialogue between Cox and Tower, who discussed the transmigration of souls, to the huse delight of their listeners.

Farmonious house hunting was the final item, and in this the party excelled themselves and "brought the house down,"

The outstanding numbers in the. second half were Wireless Up to Date" by Tower, Millward and Muirhend, "The Doubtful Quar- by Muirhead, Stretton, tetto" Hart and Summers, and the very concerted item, "Our popular Parochial Gathering," which was chock full of humourous lines and funny situations.

Declaration Explained. Expressing thanks to Sir Wil liam Peel, the Hon. Mr. Shenton remarked that the club greatly ap- preciated the financial assistance of the Government and it hoped to return their generosity in kind. He also thanked the committee who had given him so much as- sistance, without which it would have been impossible to open the men- club house. He specially tioned Messrs. Lambert, Summers and Wynne-Jones.

Mr. Shenton referred to the declaration which flying members were asked to sign. It was sim- ply a declaration that members would place their services at the disposal of the Government in times of emergency, as the Gover- nor had stated.
