Matters came to head on Thurs- day last when the two parties assembled for a settlement of their dispute. The police, however, arrived on the scene in time to stop the fight and arrested the de-. fendant with an iron bar in his possession. He was the only man armed.
It was stated by the officer that the defendant, except for his pre- sent lapse, was a respectable farm- er and well-known in the district.
His Worship imposed a fine of $5, intimating that he thought that that would meet the case.

the gallant rescue of five terror stricken pilgrims from the Asia, which was made by two. British officers of the steamship Arabi- stan. The officers scrambled up the cable and picked up and lowered the fainting pilgrims singly to a boat below.

Fifty pilgrims tried to escape by an iron ladder, but were driven back and committed suicide by cutting their throats. Two boats swamped by the pic- and stricken crowd jumping in' many were drowned.
