K.R.A. COMMITTEE PROTEST.
ALARM AT PROSPECT OF
EXTRA TAXATION.
At the monthly meeting of the General Committee of the Kowloon Residents' Association, held on" Monday last, a protracted discus- sion on the proposed increase in taxation resulted in the following resolution being
ananimously adopted:
That in view of the officially published intimation by the Government that an increase in taxation is contemplated to meet the proposed increase in expen- diture which will be occasioned by the adoption of the recom- mendations of the Salaries Com- mission, the General Committee of this Association. is strongly of the opinion that, owing to the startling drop in the exchange value of the dollar since the re- commendations were made, the proposals of the Commissioners have become impracticable at the present time."
"This Committee, in face of the rapidly rising cost of living, viewa with alarm the prospect of an increase in the Assess- ment Tax, which will have the effect of further increasing the present high rentals and thus, in turn, still further increase the cost of living for the поп- official population."
The meeting was well attended, there being only one member of the Committee absent through sickness. Those present included the Rev. J. H. Johnston (Chair- man), Mr. F. C. Mow Fang (Vice Chairman), Mr. E. Abraham (Hon, Treasurer), Mr. G. Terry (Hon. Secretary), Messrs. E. Cock, M.B.E., B. W. Tape, T. T. Laurenson,
RETURN OF THE “MASKEE.”
MR. STEVENSON WANTS MORE VOLUNTEERS.
STILL HOPEFUL.
The jung "Maskee" returned to harbour yesterday after an unsuc- cessful attempt to cover the first leg of the planned round-the-world trip.
Mr. Stevenson is still hopeful of making the trip provided ho can secure volunteers to accompany him.. He is convinced the junk can ride anything" after his experience of a day or two ago.
Interviewed by a Press - re- presentative on the "Maskee" yesterday afternoon, Mr. Steven- son said it was fearfully bad luck that the typhoon should spring up at the time it did. Showing his various positions on a chart from the time they left Hongkong, Mr. Stevenson cxpiain. ed that the winds changed very often and he was unable to keep to one direction for long.
U.S. CONGRESS AND NAVAL PACT.
MAY BE HELD OVER TILL NEXT SESSION,
Washington, May 22. In the course of a conference 2 with the Republican leader of the Senate, Senator Watson, who the President that the warned London Naval Treaty might be postponed until next session, Mr. Hoover emphasised that he want- ed the pact considered before ad- journment.
Senator Watson informed the President that if the Treaty was reported to the Senate from com- mittee before the Tariff Bill was enacted, it would be acted on then, but he laid stress on the exhaus- tion of the Senators after eighteen He months continuous session. declared that unless the Pact was brought up when the other busi- ness was concluded it would be difficult to keep the Senate in ses) sion.
The supporters of the Treaty moved that acceleration be exer- cised in its consideration. Senator Borah, on behalf of the The "Maskco" had to sail in a Committee on Foreign Relations, southerly direction immediately said that he himself was ready to reaching to open sea, then south-conclude the hearing on the 22nd

The weather began to get from bad to worse, and on Saturday night the junk's aerial was almost It was damaged, but blown away. Mr. Mitton was able to receive weather reports.
"At 12.30 p.m. on May 18 (Sun- day)," continued Mr. Stevenson, we intercepted a wire from the P. and O. liner Nagpore, which was then about 70 miles S.S.E, of our position at the time. She re-

Decide to Return,
Things became worse and worse and the water tanks start- ed leaking, In the passage-way leading to the store-rooms, there were a few inches of fresh water, which had flowed out from the tanks. We kept most of our clothes there and the result is that they are all saturated.

AMERICAN ELECTION.
SECRETARY OF LABOUR GETS NOMINATION TO SENATË.
Philadelphia, May 22. Mr. J. J. Davis, the United States Secretary of Labour, has defeated Senator Joseph Grundy, the spokesman of the extreme pro- tectionists, by 250,000 votes, in the election for nomination to the Senate. Mr. Davis ran as the candidate of the William Vare political group--Reuter's American Service.
"We were then about 100 miles from the centre of the typhoon, which had been affecting us not long after the start. We remain- ed hove-to on port tack for a while.
"The wind was in our favour on the return voyage as could be seen when I say that we travelled 140 miles in 27 houry and 40 minutes. At the end of these 140 miles, we were not far from Gap Rock.
"At about 1.15 a.m. on May 21, we signalled Waglan Lighthouse and told them of our intention to put back to port. Some difficulty was experienced in trying to take the "Maskee" through Lyemoon Pass but we eventually proceeded to Clear Water Bay,
"Shortly after we had done so, the No. 4 Police-launch hove in sight and dropped anchor beside us. We started off again this morning, the Police launch tow-
tempt. I should very much like to make another attempt, end if I can get volunteers, I shall con- tinue.
"Messrs. Banks and Grenham, I think, will not be going on the next trip. They have suffered a great deal during the last trip.
still
"Mr. Mitton, however, is keen and has expressed his inten- tion of joining me if something can be fixed up. So, provided I can make the necessary arrangé- ments and can get two other men to go along with me, it is not im- probable that another attempt will be made soon.",
"Can Ride Anything.".
In answer to another question, Mr. Stevenson said, "Yes, it is a bit late in the year to start, butj it is still possible to get out. There is no question
as regards the junk. She can ride any thing."
"Messrs, Banks and Grenham will be staying at the Y.M.C.A. to-night, but Mr. Mitton and my- self will sleep here. There is still a lot of things to be tidied up, 48 you can see for yourself," added Mr. Stevenson.
"It might have not been noticed but the "Maskee" has covered about 750 miles since its comple tion," he added. "On our first at tempt to get to Hongkong from, Swatow, Brodie
with Messrs. Price, and Banks with me, we
must have covered a good 140 miles. Thea roaming around. Swatow waiting for a favourable opportunity to make a start, we did about 50 miles; another 200 on our actual voyage here, and 860 miles on this trip."
