KEEN COMPETITION PREDICTED.

A war between local steamship concerns for Chinese freight and passenger business on the Hong- kong-Canton run is predicted fol- lowing the resignation of Mr. Woo Hay-tong, prominently connected with local steamship interests, from the position of farmer of the Chinese freight and passenger business on the Hongkong, Canton and Macao Steamboat Company. Mr. Woo Hay-tong resigned on May 15.

It will be recalled that there has been considerable controversy regarding the farming out of the Chinese freight and passenger business resulting in a split in the directorate, of the Hongkong, "In A Monastery Garden," Canton and Macao Steamboat (Ketolbey). Company Sir Robert Ho Tung "in A Peraian Market," and his fellow Chinese directora urged that there should be a change of farmers or that the Company should operate ita steamers on its own account. It was maintained that the policy of the Company had resulted in the farmer being now in competition with the Company. A resolution moved at an extraordinary general meeting that the farming policy should be abandoned or that the Directors should give preference to a non-competitive tenderer, or on the Com- run the steamers pany's own account, was passed by A narrow majority.

Reginald Foort. Wurlitzer Organ, "The Hat My Father Wore Upon St.

Patrick's Day,"

Following this, it was announc-. ed that the Directors did not ap- prove the resolution and that a poll would be taken on June 24.

ARMED ATTACK IN KING'S PARK.

A savage attack was made by six. Chinese armed with daggers who set upon a Chinese named Wong Yau, who was walking along a new road near the football ground at the back of the Club de Recreio in King's Park, late last night.

The victim was in the company of a Chinese girl, Ah Lan, and an- other young Chinese, but the six assailants concentrated their at- tack on Wong Yau, leaving the girl and the young man unmolested. The victim

wounded with three stabs in the body, but des- pite his wound he produced a police whistle and thus raised an alarm.

Nothing was stolen from the victim, who fell to the ground' after the attack, and it was with the assistance of a European who happened to pass there that he was taken to the Kowloon Hospital in an ambulance.

The outrage was reported to the police, but no arrest had been made up to mid-night.
