Definite evidence of the split in the Labour Cabinet is forthcoming by the resignation of Sir Oswald Mosley. Chan- cellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, a position which gives him Cabinet tank. Sir Oswald has resigned following a divisioning the matches which finished Cathe House of Commons on Monday night when the Govern- ment's majority was reduced to fifteen on an Opposition motion alleging that the Government had failed to deal adequately with the unemployment problem.
Sir Oswald regarded the Government's small majority as tantamount to a vote of no-confidence and accordingly resigned. The sensation follows the preparation of a memorandum by members of the Left Wing of the Labour Party, including Sir Oswald Mosley, regarding bolder methods to cope with unemployment. The Cabinet recently finally rejected the memorandum which advocates the lavish expenditure of borrowed money.
There is now considerable speculation whether the Premier will succeed in healing the breach and inducing Sir Oswald to withdraw his resignatión. Sir Oswald, however, is assured of support from the Left Wing which, as a whole, views with disapproval the more sober measures for dealing with un- employment which Mr. J. H. Thomas advocates.
