Introducing A New Empress--
EMPRESS OF JAPAN
THE ornamental designs and costly furnishings
of the Public Rooms, the majority of which are located on the Promenade. Deck, immediately place the Empress of Japan in the front rank of luxury liners. The decorators, realizing that a great number of her days will be spent in warm climates, have favoured cool, fresh colours and avoided the use of too warm furniture coverings.
The lofty walls of the Public Rooms are mostly, of untouched or merely waxed.wood, which enables the natural beauty of the grain to act as a main decorative motíve. A fine example of this "nature" treatment, which has also been carried out in the De Luxe Suites and Special Staterooms, is the lofty, glass-domed Lounge in pale mountain ash and walnut. Characteristic here, as ir, all the Public, Rooms on the Empress of Japan, is the wealth of light obtained by day from large windows and domes, and by night, from a maze of electric light effects.

DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES
ON SATURDAY, ⠀
Presenting his report on Satur day evening, when the annual dis- | tribution of prizes was held, the Principal of St. Peter's College, of Caine Road, gave a brief resume of the progress of the school since its opening in the spring of 1928:
Mrs. Wong Kwong-ehung distri buted the prizes to the successful atudents, before a large attend- ance, including Mr. Wong Kwong tin and Mr. Chan Tin-shan, both of whom also addressed the gathering.
The school was founded in 1928 with only 18 boys sitting for the entrance examination, but the number increased to 60 within three days. Great difficulty was experienced by the staff at the beginning in teaching and grading the classes, as all the students came from different schools with different standards, but their painstaking efforts were rewarded after a while when everything was put in good order,
In the autumn of the same year, the school had 160 boys on the roll, with the result that it was found necessary to extend the school's premises. A storey in No. 10, Prince Road, was accord ingly acquired, but this proved so inconvenient for the teachers, who had to run up and down between Prince Road and Caine Road even in the rainy days, that it was abandoned and another storey in No. 52, Caine Road, which was just next the school itself, was taken.
The Staff Increased.
The staff in 1928 consisted of five Anglo-Chinese teachers and one vernacular teacher, and in 1929, one European mistress, one
masters were added to the staff, making a total of 10 teachers..

Fortunately the yachtmen were able to throw themselves clear and keep afloat until à motor-boat, which appeared on the scene from the neighbouring wharf, with com- mendable speed, came up and threw out life-buoys and lines. A police launch was also quickly on the spot, and the occupants of the yacht were rescued, little the worse for their adventure.
