The Rise of the Small Car.
The colossal growth in populari- ty of the small car can well bel estimated by an examination of the Triumph Co's work in the Midlands. Eight years ago an additional fac- tory was bought at Stoke, near Coventry, in which to manufacture the then new Triumph car. Since that date, however,
extensions
have been made annually, with the result that the Stake works are now seven times as large as they were in 1922, yet they are to-day utilised; for the manufacture of car bodies only.

Mr. George Stevens, managing director of A. J. Stevens & Co. has corrected rumours that were rife concerning the new A. J. S. 9 h.. car. These coupled the new car with the old Clyna, factory and name but Mr. Stevens has made it plain that the new production has been designed in the firm's Own drawing by their own men, the only association with the Clyno Co. being the purchase of a number of valuable patents.

For Safety and Comfort.
The tremendous increase in the use of safety glass on all kinds of motor vehicles has naturally at- tracted considerable public. interest in its manufacture. A visit to one of the Triplex Co's factories, for instance, demonstrates the great precautions which have to be taken against dust; for the smal- lest speck' getting between the cel luloid and glass during manufac- ture will ruin it. What a pro- blem when there are thousands of plates of glass all covered with a sticky substance lying about; and so the drying ovens have roller doors at each end and only the operators are allowed in, wearing overalls of a special material. The glass and celluloid come together under a spray of filtered chemical so that any speck of dust is wash- ed clear immediately before the sheets become મ homogeneous whole.
Motor transport has been ros. ponsible for many developments in recent years and with it, as a mora or less necessary adjunct, goes the question of road construction. There is in progress continuous research into methods of construc- tion and towards the ideal surface and there is still undoubtedly a lot of ground to cover before the goal is reached.
On a section of the Great West Road, one of London's most im- portant traffic arteries, the Minis- try of Transport has established an experimental station where dif- ferent types of road surface ure laid down and their behaviour un- der ordinary traffic conditions al served.
A very useful testing machine) for trying out samples of concrete and materials of construction, has lately, been completed by Greenwood & Batley, the Leeds engineers. This is a 500-ton compression test- ing machine for, testing.cubes up to 12 in. square in section and 241 in. long. The load is applied by means of an electrically-driven hv draulic pump, employing oil as the working fluid and 2 tons per sq. in. working pressure.

HUDSON'S
Great
8
Gives you a ride like constant coasting
It is a Totally New Type Eight
Finest of all riding sensations is coasting, Gravity pulls like a magnet. No vibration. Just free smooth travel.
Sometimes you have experienced it in a .motor car-thrown our the clutch at the top of a long, paved hill and coasted down. Motor car engineers long have sought to build cars that would ride that way, up hill and down, on the level road, through out the full speed range. Hudson's Great 8 gives you a ride like constant coasting. A new design principle is responsible. Motor vibration is hardly perceptible. Greater horse-power in proportion to weight increases alertness. It is the same principle as in current airplane develop ment. Motor power thus has real chance
to be effective, saving in fuel and more economical in every way.
There is new smartness-modernistic, dis- tinctive. Radiator, wings, body, contours and paneling reflect it. Inside and out new motif is revealed in line, detail, treatment and finish,
Roof line is lower, yet head room is greater and road clearance Increased. Wider seats
more comfort. See this new car at your Hudson Essex merchants. Drive Hudson's Great Eight yourself and you will im mediately agree that it is a totally new type of car.
