EUROPEANS FINED.

"If the Sanitary Board elects to proceed on a notice arst, it might serve it properly on the owners." commented Mr. J. H. Armstrong, Central Police Court this appearing before Mr. Lindsell at the morning, on behalf of the Credit Foncier, owners

of the Peak Mansions, in connexion with a summons for non-compliance with a notice.

The notice was one requíring the water-closets at No. 1, Peak Man sons to be restored to a sanitary condition, and in it, the Rural Land Investment Company was erroneously named as the owners or managers of the property and the party to comply with the notice.

Mr. Armstrong suggested that an "elementary search of the Land Office files would have saved all this trouble." He understood that the Rural Land Investment Company was not now on the Register. The Credit Foncier were now owners of the building

Through the interpretation of a Mr. friend of the defendant's, Whyte Smith at the Kowloon Ma- gistracy this morning was able to understand a mute Chinese who appeared on a charge of hawking without a licence. It was stated that although the defendant made no response to questions put to him, he had given his name to the Police when arrested,

Since April 22, he had been without a servant, Ro it followed that if the water- closet had reverted to its former insanitary condition, that was due to other people.

GIRL CHANGES HER STORY.

MUI TSAI ASSAULT CASE WITHDRAWN.

In applying for the withdrawal of a charge of ill-treating a mui tsai by assaulting her, Mr. H. R. Butters who appeared before Mr. Whyte Smith at the Kowloon Magistracy this morning to pro- secute a woman of 94, Lalchikok Road, mentioned that the girl had gone back on her original story.

Mr. O. E. C. Marton, who defend- ed, complained of the action taken by the Crown and intimated that if the S.CA had gone more fully into the case at the first instance they would never have caused the defendant's arrest. He mentioned that the girl had previously fallen on some rocks, while the alleged assault had taken place two months before she had reported the occurrence. He indicated that the girl's story, being made at such a late stage should not have been accepted.

His Worship in discharging the defendant remarked that the S.CA could only go on what the girl reported to them.
