DUDDELL STREET

PARKING.

EUROPEAN FINED FOR BEING ON WRONG SIDE.

NEED OF A NOTICE.

Mr. D. E. Sherman, of the Asiatic Petroleum Co., was sum moned before Mr. Lindsell, at the Central Police Court this morning, for obstruction, in that he parked his car on the wrong side of Duddell Street. The offence was stated to have occurred on April

26th, at 9.15 a.m.

A traffe Sergeant said that the west side of Duddell Street was: that which was permitted for the parking of cars. Another car at the time in question was already left there, and by parking his cari on the other side of the road, abreast with it, defendant was causing an obstruction.

Inspector Alexander said action was taken when a telephone mes sage was received at the Traffic: Office complaining of the obstruc- tion.

The Magistrate enquired if there was not a notice up, indicat- ing which side of the street was to be used for parking purposes, and was informed by inspector Alexander that there, was not any such notice.

Inspector Alexander pointed out that building construction was being carried out on the cast side of the street, which should have, Tade obstruction by a car parked on that side of the street apparent. The Magistrate replied that, nevertheless, it was more satisfae- tory always to have these notices up wherever possible.

Mr. Sherman was fined $5.

Solution of Problem.

It is not to be expected that the turf clubs will suport the “busi- ness as usual" campaign with any enthusiasm. If all offices remain open, a pronounced falling off in revenue from sweepstakes and the totalisator is highly probable, but the solution of this problem lies in confining racing to Saturdays und other public holidays, making the racing fil the holidays and not the holidays fit the racing.

That is the policy pursued in other countries and sooner or later Malaya must fall into line. We hope, for the public good, that the gbange will be made sooner, rather than later.
