WEATHER CODES.
LOCAL CONFERENCE CONCLUDES.
We are informed by the Director of the Royal Observatory, Hong- kong, that the conference of Direc tors of Far Eastern Weather Ser- vices was brought to a successful termination yesterday afternoon.
A six-letter code for the trans- mission of daily weather tele- grams by cable, proposed by the Director of the Hongkong Observa- tory, was adopted.
A local storm signal code, based upon the Hongkong and Manila codes, was agreed upon, thanks to concessions made by the Director of the Philippines Weather Bureau, Concessions were also made by Mr. Claxton, subject to the appro- val of the Hongkong Gevorament.
An amended non-local storm signal code proposed by Mr. Clax ton was adopted after lengthy. discussion, and on the restoration of Signal No. 9 of Table 3 (con- tinental depression) at the request of Father Froc.
Agreement was arrived at in re- gard to the data to be asked for from ships, and the form in which
It should be transmitted. In addi tion to the information asked for in Notice to Mariners No. 322 of 1st. June 1928. shipe are asked to give visibility and surface tem- perature of the sea, principally in connexion with fog forecasts.
It is hoped that the new codes will come into force in March. J931,
The question of overlapping in synoptic broadcasts was not dealt with. owing to the absence of any delegates from Japan, which was deplored.
ATTACK ON CREW OF A JUNK.
STRANGE AFFAIR IN NEW TERRITORIES.
A somewhat unusual report was
Kam,
3.ID.
Ter-
made to the Water Police yes- terday afternoon by Yuen the foki of juuk No. T 5467 H; who stated that about 9 yesterday the crew of the junk, of whom six were males, were re- moving sand at Chekahan, in the Ping Shan district, New ritories, when 45 males and about 30 females, apparently from the village of Leung Kiu Tai, armed with poles and four rifles, attack- ed them and tied up two fokis.
Altogether about ten shots were discharged from the rifles, but it was done only to frighten the occupants of the junk, with the result that no one was injured.
Some of the fokis wanted to report the matter to the Ping Shan Police Station but they ware prevented from doing so by the villagers. Yuen Kam, who made the report to the Police, managed to board a junk bound for Hong- kong and reported to the Water Police Station on her arrival here about 5.30 pm.
We understand that No. 2 Police Launch has been sent to Chekshan to investigate affair.

must have been caused while the girl was with the defendant. The doctor could not say when they had been caused.
His Worship said Dr. Smalley had also stated that assuming the marks on the girl were the results of chastisement, he would not be prepared to say that the chastise- iment was excessive. "Well," pro- ceeded his Worship, "I am going to decide that point myself, and I am certainly going to hold that the chastisement was excessive."
If it had been proved, continued his Worship, that either of the fractures had been caused by the defendant he would have found her guilly of gross cruelty and in that case the defendant would have been sent to prison without the option of a fine. As it was he found, that it was a very bad case of ill-treat- ment and she would be fined $500 or three months' hard labour in de fault.
