THE CHINESE IN AUSTRALIA.

CONSUL GENERAL AT SYDNEY URGES THEIR CASE.

Sydney, May 1.

The Chinese Consul Generai has; sent a Note to the Federal Govern. ment urging the discontinuance of the taking of fingerprints of un- prohibited Chinese. The practice was instituted in order to identify prohibited immigrants. The Note says the practice is embarrassing the Nationalist Government as it causes a popular demand for re- ciprocity.

It appeals also for limitation of the indiscriminate right of search of prohibited immigrants, which is not applied to other na- tionalities.

The Note suggests the pardoning of the few prohibited immigranta who may be hiding in Australia, and the institution of a rigid sys- tem of registration at the Consu- late.

bandits captured Tairu in south-west An-1 hwei on April 27, and took pri- soner Spanish priest, Father Herrera, who has since been rescued by troops, and has arrived at Anking.

Bandits are also reported to have captured the neighbouring town of Hwoshan on April 28 and taken prisoner two Spanish priests Fathers Hidalgo and Avito, and their whereabouts are at present unknown.-Renter.
