The alleged fraudulent mortgag-| ing of a launch, which had a se quel at the April Criminal Ses- sions last year, formed the aub ject of an Original Jurisdiction ac- tion which came before the Chief Justice (Sir Joseph Kemp) in the Supreme Court this morning. The case was adjourned until Wednes- day morning at 10.90.

Amendment Defeated. Bringing to a climax a bitter debate over Filipino immigration into the United States, the senate, voting 41 to 25, defeated the amendment of Senator Samuel M. Shortridge, Republican of Call 'fornia, which sought to exclude all but Filipino officials, students, tourists and similar classes from America.

The Shortridge proposal had been offered as an amendment to the bill of Senator William J. Har ria, Democrat of Georgia, which seeks to establish a quota for im- migration of Latin-Americans into the United States.

Result of Voting.

The Shortridge amendment was supported by 9 Democrats and by 16 Republicans. But 41 members of the senate declined to restrict Filipino immigration into

Plaintiffs' Claim.

Defendants refused and still re- fuse to deliver the launch in con- sequence of which plaintiffs claim (1) a declaration that the launch is their property and that no right or interest in it passed to Mr. Basta under the mortgage; (2) the re- turn of the launch, together with all documents of title, licences, per- mits and all other documents con- cerning the boat; (3) damages for detention of the launch and docu- ments.

PRICE JUMPS FROM 23 CENTS TO 80 CENTS.

NEW YORK LEADING IN NATIONAL LEAGUE,

VERY SUDDEN CHANGE

Singapore, Apr. 21. Two or three hours on Saturday saw a drastic change in the price of petrol in Singapore.

When motorists were on their way to the office in the morning, and bought petrol, they were charged from 23 cents to 28 cents a galion, but those who left it until tiffin time to fill up their tanks, received a bad shock when they were charged 80 cents. The price |to-day is 79 cents,

can only mean one thing, and that This sudden jump in the price is that the "war" which has been waged for the past three months between the Asiatic Petroleum Co. and the Standard Oil Co. of New York has been settled. Evidently a trace has been agreed upon, but no confirmation of this can be obtained from the local represen tatives of either company.

During the struggle between the two companies Singapore motorists have reaped the benefit, In January last the prices ranged from 65 to 70 cents a gallon, and then, with surprising rapidity, they fell rapidly.

Cuts have been forthcoming daily, and on Saturday last the bottom was reached when petrol was obtained at some pumps for 23 cents, and at no pump was a charge of more than 28 cents made.

situated localities.

The safety of shipping, and hence the prosperity of our trade in general, is largely dependent on our meteorological services, while the safety of life and property ashore is to a less degree imperilled by typhoons, and can only be pro- perly safeguarded by a system of timely warnings.

It is obvious, gentlemen, that a uniform code of signals would be of the utmost value to our meteoro- logical services if a uniform code suitable for all requirements could be devised.
