MACAO NOTES.

HOW EASTER IS OBSERVED IN THE CHURCHES.

Macao, Apr. 19. Macao has long been known as the Holy City, and at no time is this fact brought more closely to attention than at Easter time, when, commencing with the fes- tivities organised by the Catholics at Macao, on Palm Sunday, there is a whole week of devotions, in which thousands of the Faithful take part, with every sign of the utmost devation.

The ceremony of the blessing of the palms on Palm Sunday is an impressive one, and the churches. are thronged on this day.

Commencing on Wednesday of Holy Week, in the evening matins are a feature of the ceremonies, assisted by thousands of the Faithful. The whole of this day cy men, women, and ensidren con- is also taken up in all the churches fessing at the many confessionals to be found in the churches. spiritual retreat for men is con- ducted at St. Joseph's Seminary College on three days, ending Wednesday, and is thronged.

On Thursday, in the morning, general communion is given in all the churches, and a holiday is granted in all public offices to enable the people of the colony to partake of communion und the other services which follow. In every church, following a late mass, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed and through the day and Devout, members of the night. Through the day and through the night the watch is kept up, and on Thursday night till Friday morning.

All through the day and night the Faithful go from church to church, making a total of seven visits, at the Cathedral, at the churches, and the convent chapels in the Colony.

On Friday morning there is a special ceremony in all the churches when the Blessed Sacra- ment is taken down from the enshrined altars, and e' ceremony of the Adoration of the Sacred Cross is participated in by all the faithful. In the afternoon of the same day following vespers, there is a procession at the, Cathedral, at which thousands of the Catho- lic's may be seen, with a special

sermon.

Saturday is the day of Hallelu- jah, with Christ risen from the dead, and the greeting that passes from mouth to mouth, after the church services in the morning is, [ "Hallelujah.".

At the Cathedral, on Sunday morning there is the Procession of the Resurrection, and later in the day the parish priest goes from house to house calling down God'a blessing on each home, and thus concludes the week's duties at the churches throughout the Colony
