Doctor's Evidence.
Dr. D. J. Valentine, who was in charge of the Government Civil Hospital at the time, testified, while referring to Hospital records, that on the date in question, there was admitted into the institution a man
of the name given, suffering from stab wounds. He had a wound an inch-and-a-half in length which penetrated the left chest, and an other measuring half-an-inch in the lower left side of the chest. There
was also a wound in the left arm.
The two wounds in the chest were serious in that, they penetrat ed the chest into the lung, one nar- rowly missing the heart, and were caused by a sharp pointed instru: ment. The patient made a good
recovery.
Mr. Rendall (cross-examining for the defence): Is there any- thing in the nature of the wound to indicate the relative position of this man and the man who struck
him?
Witness replied that the direc- tion of the wounds showed that one was caused by a downward thrust and the other by a slightly upward thrust with the weapon.

In spite of that, he recognized the accused, having worked at the Slaughter House side by side with him for a period of three years. He had once before, five months ago, scen
the accused at the Central Market, but had delayed taking action because he was too preoccupied at earning his own living and supporting a wife and family. Not until he was sent for by the police did he appear in the present proceedings.
