On that night, a band of armed robbers forced an entry into a house occupied by an aged farmer, named Wong Tsiu-yip, in the village of Ting Hang, Toyahan disance. trict. It was dark inside, but in the light of electric torches carried by the ten or more men engaged in the enterprise, much of that which ensued was seen and de scribed by two of the inmates who would be called as witnesses in the
case,
After binding and gagging the four people in the usual manner, and robbing them of money and property to the value of about $1,000, the bandits attempted to as kidnap and take them away captives. Wong Tsiu-yip, the aged farmer, on account of his advanced years, was unable to proceed as fast as was desired, and he was brutally shot dead by a man al- leged to be the fugitive.
Village volunteers overtook the party some distance out on their journey, and after an exchange of shots, the robbers were compelled to abandon the captives and seek safety in immediate flight.
The fugitive was not seen again by any of the victims until March 25th last, when, after his arrest in Hongkong, he was put up for identification and picked out by two of them.
A Gang of Ten. Evidence was called, and Chung Chi-nam, a foki of the Fook Lee Shipping Company, of Kongmoon, took the witness-stand.
He said that the man who was killed was a distant uncle whom be was visiting on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
That night he stayed with the Lold man, as also did Wong Ping- fong, a relative and a woman who was blind..
Shortly after four in the morn ing, he was aroused by the front door being forced in by robbers. There were ten of them, and two of them were armed with revolvera, with which they threatened him.
He was gagged and his hands tied behind his back, being then robbed of his wrist watch, a gold chain and

Cross-examining on behalf of the fugitive, Mr. W. D. Owen asked: How could you see him during the proceedings robbery the whole being lighted up only by fitful gleams of torches as the men were were five moving about? There torches. The men were moving about.
Mr. Owen also suggested it was difficult, under the starlight, to dis- tinguish the face of the man who fired the gun, as any light from a torch would be directed at the victim's face by the man engaged in the shooting.,

Witness averred he could see the fugitive clearly under the starlight.
Mr. Owen next suggested that, before formal identification of the fugitive at the parade, the witness might have seen the.fugitive.as he. was brought into Court for the pur- posea of a remand

In giving corroborative evidence, Wong Ping-fong, who was with the previous witness at the time of the shooting, declared that the band of robbers which broke into the house was under the leadership of the fugitive. He knew the fugitive as well as, two others in the gang as belonging to the village.
"The fugitive had no honest busi- ness. He had returned from the United States five years previous ly, and taught at the village school for a year or two after his return. from abroad."
Witness said that after the robbery and murder, he denounced the fugitive and others in the party! of robbers whom he knew, to the district Magistrate.
Mr. Owen (cross-examining): Did you quarrel with him?-No.
Mr. Owen: Did he have any, quarrel with you?
Mr. Lindsell: I understand it takes two to make a quarrel.
Mr. Owen: I mean he may think fugitive is to blame and that he did not quarrel at all. (To wit ness) Had there been any quarrel between the fugitive and you at any time?-Never.
The old man and the other man in the house were similarly bound and gagged. Identification Parade.
Mr. T. Murphy, A. S. P. gave evidence with regard to an identi- fleation parade held under his supervision in Victoria Gaol on March 25th. The fugitive, he said, was placed in a row of ten men, ali of the same build as himself and wearing similar clothing. On top of that, the police also deemed it advisable to have each man wear a straw hat, with a wide brim, such as worn by the water police ses- men Fugitive was given the option of choosing his place in the line and be selected the third post- tion.

Concerning Cooking.
ECONOMY.
When all the factors are taken into consideration cooking by gas is the cheapest method of cooking. Fuel is only used during the actual process of cook- ing, and is under absolute control all the time so that just the right amount of heat can be given to each dish.
The gna in the oven can often be turned off before the cooking is quite completed as sufficient heat is retained to finish off, for example, milk puddings and casserole dishes.,
It is wasteful to keep the gas alight until these dishes are ready for table, and to leave the empty oven slowly to cool down, when say 15 minutes use of gas might be saved.
