DERWENT TO BE BROKEN UP.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS ON THE CHINA COAST.
The local shipping community will be interested, and many will be sorry to hear that a well-known steamer on the South China Coast, the Der- went, which is at present lying idle at Yaumati, will soon be broken up.
Not so long ago, the Derwent was still running regularly but for the last few years, she has been only making intermittent trips to Singapore and other ports on the China coast.
She was built in Southampton and came out East about 25 years ago, having been bought by a Chinese merchant residing at Saigon, who this service for a great number of used her for the rice trade between Hongkong and Saigon. She was in years and earned for herself the reputation of being one of the best ships on the run.
In the year 1925, she was sold to the Chiu On S.S. Co., who ran her British as she had hitherto run. Dur under the Chinese flag instead of the ing the strike in the summer of that year, she was put on the Hongkong- Swatow-Foochow service, the object being to put her in competition with the vessels of the Douglas SS. Co.
Since that year, the Derwent has not done much and for the greater part of the time has been laid up in Hongkong.

called the Kum Ning and the Yuet Chow.
She is very well-known among the local shipping community. Having been out here for such a number of years, the Derwent has been officered by a great many China coasters, some of whom must be sorry to see the scrapping of their old boat.
The last man to be in command The "war council" has sent out of the Derwent is, we believe, Capt. five hundred volunteers to sell Brewer, who, until lately, was master contraband salt to the public. o the Hydrangea, which is also Mrs. Sarojini Naidu's sister-in-owned by the Chiu On S.S. Co. Capt. law has collected £750 at the Cotton Brewer left the Colony for Home Exchange, where merchants paid sometime ago. fancy prices at an auction.
Karachi reports state that mob
rowdyism marked the last day of the "national week". A nationalist procession stoned private motorcars, eoveral drivers being injured. The Piece Goods Association has passed a resolution not to order foreign cloth for a twelve-month.-Reuter.
