ST. ANDREW'S CLUB ENTERTAINMENT.
TWO AMUSING COMEDIES PRESENTED.
As a diversion from the, ususi) socials which are held during the cold weather, members of the St. Andrew's Club wound up their winter activities last night with two comedies which were pre- Isented in the Church Hall before a large and appreciative audience. Much time and labour were put into the rehearsals of the two plays, "A Blank Cartridge," by lan lay, and "Aunt Maria's Wireless," short sketch by Mabel Constan- duros, and the portrayal of the various characters reflected credit on the producer, the Rev, W. W. Rogers, as well as on those who were entrusted with the
more
difficult task of interpreting the roles.
The chief honours in the major of the two plays went to Anthony Cole and Miss Maud White, while Sydney Edgar distinguished him-1 self as Smithson, J.P. N. A. E. Mackay and Miss Aletha Hirst! both acquitted themselves well in
the two other roles.
Miss Rita Cole and Mr. Rupert Baldwin displayed great talent in their respective parts in “Aunt Maria's Wireless", being ably supported by Miss Eileen Bliss, Mrs. M. Vessoona and Miss Aletha Hirst.
With such small casts in both plays each is individually called upon to give of his or her best. and none of the performers was found wanting in this respect. It was altogether a very clever in- terpretation for amateurs.

UNDERGROUND · TERMINUS FOR NEW YORK.
New York, Apr. 11. A gigantic thirty-five acre un- derground railway terminus in the centre of New York, costing hun-
dreds of millions of dollars, and accommodating 150 trains an hour between New York and New Jer sey, is one of the big industrial plans given prominence in the
newspapers.
Others include the imminent ac- quisition of control of the English Columbia Gruphophone Company by the Radio Corporation of Ameri- ca, whereby the latter will ac- quire the world-wide manufactur-

HUSBAND ASKED TO. SIGN AGREEMENT.
SETTLEMENT IMPROBABLE
IN SOARES QUARKEL.
The possibility of the negotia- tions to bring about a settlement in the domestic affairs of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Suares, being of no avail was indicated when the summons for maintenance was again mentioned before Mr. Whyte Smith, at the Kowloon Magistracy, yesterday afternoon.
Mr. J. T. Prior is appearing 'for Soares, while Mr. Leo Mrs. d'Almada, snr. represents the de- fendant.
His Worship asked if the parties had come to any settlement and was told by Mr. Prior that he was He had submitted a afraid not. draft of agreement to Mr. d'Almada, who in reply, regretted that his client could not see his way to signing it. Mr. d'Almada had in- timated in his reply that the de- to treat his wife in the same way as when she fendant was willing first went to him as his wife,
His Worship remarked that he did not think the parties could make any conditions of marriage. If the husband and wife had lived to- gether they would be subject to the law governing marriage.
..
Mr. d'Almada described the agreement as putting the defen- dant in a state of servility. He said that the prosecution wanted to make him a slave. It was im- possible for his client to execute such an agreement. He was soгIY that Mrs. Soares was not prepared to return to her husband as the sister had agreed to live separate from the parties, and the husband was willing to treat her in, the same way as when she first went to his house, subject to legal con- sequences.
Mr. d'Almada intimated that the summons would have to go on and suggested that a date should be fixed.
His Worship said that he hoped there would be some further effort made as he thought it was absurd that the husband and wife 'should be apart because of quarrels of some very trivial nature.
The hearing was adjourned until the afternoon of Thursday 24..

evening on Modern Methods of Measurement. Professor Middle- ton Smith explained some of the methods of measurements that are now used to make recoris much more accurate and retined than can be obtained by the primitive senses of touch and sight, and spoke of the great benefit that these had brought to the whole world. He urged all to co-operate in this great work and thus make life nobler by reducing the evils of ignorance, wasted effort and poverty in China and indeed in very part of the world,
on
Professor Middleton Smith re- ferred to the varying standards in China. He said the greatest: drag
all all commerce, on ideas of the new Industrial era in China, on all hopes of prosperi ty in the country, is the chaotic state of the measures in use. We must have a definite standard of length for comparison; that standard must be legalised and rigidly adhered to, if there is to be .accuracy in the work that is done.
If trade is to be carried on at all there must. be some accepted conventions. In practice, in any place in China, each trade has its standard; and trade standards in any one place differ from those in other places.
own
The social and economic bene- fits that follow the adoption of a uniform system of measures are incalculable. There can be no better method of improving com-1 mercial intercourse and develop- ing the natural resources of the country than a uniformity of the system of measures in China,
