ABBE JE- ROME COIGNARD?
Judged by any very strict standard of morals, the Abbe · Jerome Coignard would be accounted a most outrageous old reprobate, for he loved the good things of life. rather too often and rather too well to enhance the dignity of his calling.
Yet his creator, Anatole France, thought very well of the old Abbe, and so for all his faults we recognise in him
а
rattling good fellow-a humanitarian of wide sym- pathies, a scholar of great learning, though without pedantry, and a shrewd and witty observer of life, full of mellow benevolence. and charity.
His love of life lead him into all sorts of queer predica-. ments-bacchanalian reels, quarrels with infuriated lovers and the mysteries of an alchemist's household, where his gentle scepticism had fall play amongst the salamanders: which the maniac householder' professed to conjure up for his bewonderment.
Finally. the old Abbe met his death at the hand' of another maniac, who- erroneously supposed that he. had run off. with his niece, and the end of the bon viveur was very touching and brave,
A philosopher who loved life and laughter in full measure, the. Abbe Jerome Coignard will not meet with: much approval from the. Puritans, but if only you can forget the old man's singular, naughtiness you cannot help but love him. At any rate, should you care to chance it. you will come across the old reprobate in "At the Sign of the Reine Pedauque," of which many excellent trans lations exist.
