YOUNG CHINA ÄND RELIGION.
"MATERIALISM" AS AN
OBSTACLE.
An interesting address on young China and religion was given by Rev. John Foster of Canton to members of the Victoria Diocesan and Missionary Association last evening in the hall of St. John's Cathedral where an "At Home" was held.
▾
Mr. P. S. Cassidy, presided and briefly introduced the speaker. He mentioned, prior to extending a welcome to Mr. Foster, that the "At Homes" arranged twice year ly, in the Spring and Autumn, helped to make the divisions be tween the different communities in the Colony mere lines of de- markation and no longer insuper- able obstacles.
After thanking the meeting for the welcome extended to him, Mr. Foster said he was rather afraid there would get into the gathering the little devil that he was ac- quainted with. It seemed to him hard to be a missionary or to be connected with missions and to escape an air of patronage patronage, that insidious imp, who was always bobbing up to pat us on the back and tell us that "here is our Christianity and we are giving it to beather Chinese." The speaker reminded his audience that Christ was not ours nor was Christianity ours.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 1930.
Confucianism.
The speaker then went on to refer to Confucianism; Taolam and Buddhism as the forces which Christianity found itself oppose-1, and taking each in turn went on to describe its influence in the country. Of the first he said that this was the name which was somewhat inappropriately given in the West to the State Religion of Old China. It was a thorough- going state religion inasmuch as every position in the state held its corresponding religious duties. This was a big thing for Chris- tianity to encounter, as big as Em- peror worship had been in Rome.
The old state religion went with the old state but what succeeded to the position in Modern China? How strange it was to see in China a state which left no room for religion and would allow none to be left in its system of educa- tion. Official China in the pre- paration of its sons and daughters for life, refused to recognise life's spiritual aspect or to let others recognise it. Almost certainly it was a temporary phase, partly due to the swing of their own pen- dulum and partly to the relies of Russian influence.
In most other lands such inter- ference with religious, liberty would raise a tremendous outcry. To the mass of the Chinese people it was a matter of indifference. To the majority of Young Chiza. it was an enlightened, reasonable policy. The set of the tide was in the direction of Materialism; that was what Christianity was "up against" in China to-day.
Taoism.

Taoism was described by the with the majesty of its founder, from the West with His dark hair speaker as having always been a fallen very low. It was very hard and swarthy skin. Christianity was rather disreputable thing, a kiad to find a monk who really knew not ours, at least as the peculiar of rag-bag of outworn superati- "what it was all about" while privilege of Englishmen. Augus- tious beliefs and magical practices there was little religious element tine and his fellow monks arrived that survived from a very early to be found among the muns who in Canterbury about the year 690 and very low stage of China's were merely engaged in a trade, and in 635 a band of men in simil- religious development. It was making vegetarian dishes for ar dress bearing in their hands the Taoist priests who were the sale, or hiring themselves out to that same standard of the Cross alchemists of China'e Middle say masses for the dead and many and on their lips that same Chris- ages, for ever seeking the were using the cloak of religion tian mossage, arrived at Sianfu, philosopher's stone that would the capital of the greatest Empire transmute the baser metals into of that ancient world. The Enggold and the elixir of life that lish Christian Church was founded would make men immortal. only thirty-five years before that of China.
Influence of Islam in Europe. If we had had a bird's eye view of the world early in the eighth century they would have had many feurs for the survival of Chris tianity in the West and just as much confidence in its progress in China where the church was en- joying almost unbroken imperial and official favour and extending its influence throughout the Pro vinces.
The speaker mentioned that in the West Islam was spreading throughout the Mediterranean lands and if there had been no battle of Tours in 732 and if our or two events during the following centuries in China had fallen out slightly differently, it was not hard to imagine that to-day Chris tian China would have been send ing missionaries to a Moslem Europe.

for Society the Abolition of Superstitious Practices was commented upon by the speaker who illustrated by a parable which happened in Canton, where a certain reformer advocated the destruction of all insanitary houses and other things which were detrimental to the health of the inhabitants, how ineffective the Society was. The result was that their city had gone back to the age of the cave-man, because most of the little better than people were animals, going about naked and without any sort of roof to shelter them.

Confucianism, Taoism and Bud-1 dhism, continued the speaker, had nothing to do with Young China which regarded those things as his and his country's worst MALWA enemies! There were no "three MIRZAPORE religions" of modern China. The RAJPUTANA set of the tide was in the direction KASHGAR of Materialism. There was more any such thing as "foreign" missions: there were just two things in the whole wide world, Christianity and godlessness fighting for the world's soul.
