ISMAILIA MEMORIAL.

CEREMONY ON LAKE TIMSAH.

The unveiling ceremony of the memorial erected on the shores of Lake Timsali to commemorate those who lost their lives in the defence of the Suez Canal during the War, took place recently.,

There was a distinguished ga- thering of representatives of the Allied countries, comprising the High Commissioner. Sir Percy, Lorraine, General Strickland, Commander-in-Chief in Egypt, the French and Italian Ministers, the Egyptian Minister of War, the French General De Plepape, and members of the Suez Canal Board, including Sir Ian Malcolm. The Commanders of H.M.S. Caledon and the French cruiser Valmy, which came up the Canal specially to take part in the ceremony, were also present.

The company were enterutined to luncheon by the Marquis de Vogue, Chairman of the Suez Canal Board. The Marquis gave a vivid description of the Turkish attack on the Canal, and referred to the part taken in repulsing it by the British warships Swift- sure and Elio, and by the Gurkhas, Punjabis, and Rajputs, and by Bri- tish artillerymen.

The band of the King's Regiment played "Sambre et Meuse," and, finally, to the beating of drums, the soilors hoisted the British, French, Italian, and Egyptian flags. Mr. Henderson, the Foreign Secretary, in a letter to Sir Ian Malcolm, ask- ed him to express to the Canal Company, on behalf of the British Government, the hope that the

Chiang Confident.

While it is admitted by official | circles in Nanking that the Chiang Kai-shek regime is facing a serious military crisis, threatening the overthrow of the Government, Marshal Chiang is quoted as say ing that he is confident of the success of the Nationalist forces.

Marshal and Madame Chiang Kai-shek with Mr. T. V. Soong, Finance Minister, arrived at Ningpo yesterday morning and it is semi-officially stated that the President's party will return to Nanking to-morrow.

At first it was surmised that origin in the fact that Socony had contracted with the Soviet Naphta Syndicate for large oil deliveries, divided over a period of five years, amounting to 25,000,000 American dollars,

But this was denied.

The reason was given that Socony was following a rigorous price policy in these territories and that Sir Henry Deterding had tried in vain to convince Socony to relinquish this market. As a con- sequence the price war burst forth in all its vehemence.

To-day, the price of petrol la only 16 Dutch cents, and almost daily price cuts are announced. One does not know where it will end.
