SAINT GEORGE'S

SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING HELD

LAST EVENING.

That the ball organised by the St. George's Society in January last was atteh a financir! succèss as to enable the Society to carry forward a substantial sum, was the pleasant news reported to the members at the annual meeting of the Society, held in the Chamber of Commerce Board room yester day evening.

The Hon. Mr. W. E. L. Shenton, as the outgoing President, presid- ed at the outset, and was Inter succeeded by Mr. T. E. Pearce, Those present, in addition to these two gentlemen included Messrs. G. C, Moxon, W. A. Dowley and C. G. Alabaster, K.C.. (Past Pre- sidents), Messrs. E. Cock, M.B.E., W. A. Cornell, L. J. Davies, H. B. 1. Dowbiggin, C. Bulmer Johnson, S. J. Jordain, T. II. King, V. C. Labrum, F. J. Shervell (Commit- tee) and Mr. S. T. Butlin (Hon. Secretary).

The report (already published) was read to the meeting, and the Mr. W. E. L. Shenton, in. lion. moving the adoption of the report and accounts said:

Gentlemen,-The report and ac count for 1929, having been in your hands for several days. will, with your permission, take them as read.

count. I think that there are only two items calling for special com- ment, viz., subscriptions and en- trance fees on the Receipts side, and grants and donations on the Payments side.

Subscriptions Less, Subscriptions and entrance fees show a falling off of $259 in spite of the fact that 58 new members joined the Society during the year. The grants and donations have been much heavier than usual, and accounted for the expenditure of $966.05. Owing to the lack of ready funds, your Committee had to refuse several applications for assistance during the early part of the year. I would enjoin mem- bers to pay the small annual sub- seription as soon as the request is made. By doing so, a great deal of time and trouble is sav

ed.

The observance of St. George's Day was confined to the usual in- ter-change of greetings hetween fraternal Societies; and the hold ing of a concert at the Lee Theatro for the Services.

The annual ball, which was held for the first time at the Peninsula Hotel proved a great success, both socially and financially, und I am glad to be able to tell you that there will be a substantial rum to carry forward.
