It appears that the deceased woman fled in terror from the building at the outset, but suddenly realising that her young son was not with her, dashed back into the blaze and was trapped by the collapse of the staircase. She was found dead with her boy in her arms.
Four houses were affected, Nos. 192, 194, 196, and 198. No. 196, where the fire originated, was gutted, No. 198, which was scryed by a common staircase, was severely damaged, and, the others suffered to a much lesser extent.

The provision this year, how- ever, covered a much larger pro- portion of non-effective charges than in 1914.
To-day the non-effective charges amounted to eight and a half millions compared with three millions in 1914, so if one com- pares the actual effective services of the Navy, the present net estimates were forty-three millions as compared with £18,500,000 in 1914.
