CHURCHES TO PRAY
FOR RUSSIA.
GOVERNMENT'S OFFICIAL
INSTRUCTIONS.
POLITICAL PROBLEM.
London, Feb, 28. The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have asked that March 16 be observed in all Churches as a day of prayer on behalf of those who are the victims of the religious persecution in. Russia.
The Primate, in his message, expresses the hope that special prayers will continue during the week following Sunday, March 16.
The Archbishops recall that His Eminence the Pope has asked for intercessions on March 19, and they understand that the Evangeli- cal Free Churches will observe March 16 ns a day of prayer.
The Army Council has addressed a letter to the Army Commands at Home and abroad to the effect that has His Majesty's Government assumed, that it is undesirable that intercessory prayers for the Russians should be read at religious services in the Army.
Similar instructions have been sent to Navy establishments, His Majesty's Ships and the Air Force Commands.--Reuter.
A notice by the naval authoritica to the effect indicated above was published in Hongkong last week)
A BAD POLICY.
EMPIRE FREE TRADE AND THE COLONIES.
London, Feb. 23. The Conservatives are opposed strongly to the recently formed United Empire Party.
Last night Mr. Ormaby-Gore, who was Colonial Under-Secretary in the late Government, said that in no circumstances could he join the Party, or support its policy. The great Dominions were deter- mined to become industrial manu- facturing countries and were no longer content to be regarded merely RS producers of materials, and they would tolerate outside interference.

Bishop's Career. Members of the Salesian Com- munity in Hongkong and Macas, by whom the late Mgr. Versiglia was much revered, were deeply moved to hear of his death and that of his companions under such terrible circumstances. For Z time their hopes had been revived by Father Lareno's letter enjoin- ing them to pray for the success of his mission, but the telegram which was received yesterday morning, confirmed their worse fears.
The late Mgr. Versiglia,, an S. C. M. Post representative was informed; was well-known amongst Catholic missionary cir- cles in China. A native of Milan, Italy, he came out to China years ago, and immediately in- terested himself in that Industrial- Christian work for which the Salesian Order is, noted.

In that office, the late Mgr. Ver- siglia had continued for about 10 years, when last week, he left the Mission at Shiukwan on his an- nual pastoral visit to various points, accompanied by Father Caravario, and three Chinese Sia- ters of the Order. He had intend- ed to proceed to Lin Chau, via Lin Kung Hau, when he and his com- panions were attacked by pirates who infest this part of Kwang- tung; under circumstances which revealed premeditation. He is survived by his mather, who is in Italy.

Caravario, who has shared martyrdom with the late Bishop, was a young man of only 25 years of age. A native of Turin, he came out to China as a lay Bro. ther.
