"Wit, there is none with the programmes of the B.B.C.," said Mr. Herbert, "Indeed, they say nowadays it is as simple as B.B.O.” (Laughter.) Criticising the Sunday pro- grammes, he appealed to the B.B.C. to cheer up our Sundays and justify its existence.
Mr. N. G. Luker (Corpus Christi) claimed that the B.B.C. had been the means of introducing a new sphere of entertainment to the world, although the great artista who broadcast probably did not appeal to such an aloof gallery as the Cambridge Union.
Mr. Van Gielgud, productions director to the B.B.C., defended the programmes. "We cannot hope to satisfy everyone," he said, "but we claim that we do satisfy some of the people, sometimes."
A. speaker lamented the fact that broadcasting was killing individua- lism. "No one sings in his bath to- day," he said, "he takes with him a portable wireless set." (Laugh- ter.)
Mr. J. C. Stobart, Director of Education with the B.B.C., winding u the debate for the opposition, said that the future mentality "of the nation would largely depend upon whether broadcasting, was made a great blessing or a great curse.
