THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11,

YOUNG CHINESE. SENTENCED.

IMPRISONED FOR UTTERING

FORGED DOCUMENTS;"

Y. 8. When, a young Chinese, formerly employed by the Adver tising and Publicity Bureau of Alexandra Bulldings, was yester day, at the Central Police Court, sentenced by Mr. Grantham to cight montha hard labour on charges of uttering forged docu: ments.

$50 per month, and he took this on a month's trial, starting from October 1. She had never entered inte any written agreement with him as to service, as he was only on a month to month, mais until the end of the year. She had not sign- ed the documents as they stood at prosent, but the signaturo, on them was here. When she ouployed him she asked him if there was anybody! In Hongkong' who could guarantee him, but she had never asked him to put up money, neither had she asked him to put up any security in cash. She took him to Kwang- chowwan to assist her in December, She went round and booked up five altes and opened preliminary negotiations with the landlords and farmers, and left this defendant to close the contracts. She also sent him to get Post Office officini forms, but he came back about 7 o'clock the same evening and said he could only get one. She wrote out five contracts, four on the ship's paper and one on the official form. She wrote them out on the top half, and signed them at the bottom, leaving a blank space for the Chinest version to be filled in. She gave him these, together with a list of the following instructions as to how he was to charges were preferred against carry on, and she returned by boat kim:-

that same night." She did not see defendant again until he got back to Hongkong on December 12, and when he arrived she asked him for a statement of what he had done, and he mid that he would have to Ketjit out for her. He did so the next day, but produced statements which were very unentinfactory.

When, recently at the Summary Court, sued his employers for the return of $750, moiles which he alleged he lent or were owed him by Mrs. B. Thompson, a Director of the Advertising Company, but the documents which he produced in substantiation of the claim. were viewed with suspicion, by the Puisne Judge, who, in dismissing the action, ordered them to be impounded.

Mr. J. H. Armstrong appeared for the complainants. The defen- dant, who was unrepresented. pleaded not guilty.

He had not carried out her in- atractions. He did not produce the actual contract forma which she had made out,—as he said he had destroyed them as there was not sufficient room for the Chine version. She thought this excuse quite feasible.

which he gave her a receipt. Ho then made no clatin for $600, which he had alleged she borrowed, and the first she heard of this was when his solicitors wrote saking her for it. It was her practice never to issue receipts other than on the official forms, and she had never issued a receipt in the form produced. Both documents (pro-] duced) were deliberate forgeries. She was present in the Chinese Y.M.C.A when defendant's room was searched and photographic plates, belonging to her were found. He had no authority to have that property in his possession, and he must have taken them out of the photographic drawers.

Documents Impounded. Opening the case, Mr. Armstrong dealt with the circumstances under which the defendant came to be em

ployed by Mra, Thompson and the terms upon which he took up that employment.

Cross Examination.

Mr. Armstrong referred to the business trip which, at the end of Last year, Mrs. Thompson made to the French part of Kwangchowwan and the story which defendant re- lated from this point, of how Mrs. Thompson, being allegedly in need of funds, had borrowed from him a sum of $600, which he previously Defendant: Did you ask me for had received from a schoolboy a ganrantee?—Yes. As a re sult, the Puisne Judge ordered the alleged receipt and other docu- ments to be impounded, and the proceedings now being taken had to do with serious charges pre- ferred against the defendant of being in possession and of uttering forged documents.'

After the defendant was arrest ed his room at the Chinese Y.M.C.A. was searched and a number of Articles appearing on the third charge were discovered,"

Referring to the two documents, defendant asked witness whose signature it was and she replied "Mine".

Really? Yes.

Re-examined, Mrs. Thompson enid that she would not spell the word "Cheque" as "Check" as was the case on the two documents, which the defendant, alleged was the cor rect way of spelling them.
