Witness Bald, in answer to the Coroner, that if the deceased had Swalow
Sandakan had an excessive meal there would have been vomiting.
Capt. W. J. Shipsey, I.M.S., medicul officer at the Indian Mili- | tary Hospital, Kowloon, spoke of having been summoned to the de- ceased's quarters, but on arrival 'he found the Subadar dend. Wit- ness agreed with Dr. Dovey that the deceased was in a state of good health and was a man of strong build. He mentioned that he thought the Subadar was one of the biggest men in the battalion,
Mr. E. R. Dovey, Government Analyst, said that he examined the contents of the stomach of the deceased and found 'the blood to be in a very unusual condition. It was unusually fluid and showed no tendency to congulate, was bright | red in colour and showed no re- duction when examined by the
Tho spectroscopic test.
only common poison that would bring about that condition in the blood was carbon monoxide, which was given off by geysers, charcoal fires and other similar methods.
Witness sald that the condition In the deceased's, blood 'could not ] have been brought about by natural causes but showed the" presence of blood poisoning. Teats were carried out for the presence of poison in the blood, but the results were negative,
Continuing, witness, sald he could not entirely exclude al coholic poisoning, although there were no traces of it. He said that a case was reported where a man | had been known to have taken alchohol and died ten hours later, and no traces were found.
Witness said that If the decens- ed had taken the methylated spirits it would certainly produce acute gastritis.
Without retiring, the jury re- burned a verdict of death by acuta gastritis, the cause of which was unknown. The Coroner, concur red, and anld that it would be very difficult to say that death was due " to "poisoning. An expression of sympathy to the widow was added,
