Commenting on this decision, the Finance Minister stated that the action was necessary, other wise China would be unable to satisfy the foreign loan obliga- tions secured on the Customs.

He pointed out that China pays nine millions-sterling every year, which at the present silver levels would mean this year an excess in thels of sixty per cent. compared with 1925, and twenty per cent. compared with last year.

Position Explained.

The Finance Minister has issued a statement explaining that in converting specific rates to a gold basis the average rate of exchange for the Inst three months of 1929 will be used, from February 1 to March 15. On and after March 10, the approximate average rate of exchange for January, 1929, will be used.

On and after February 1, the Haikwan ael will be discontinued na unit of calculation of duties on imports from abroad. Instead, a new gold unit will be used. This unit will be equal to 60.1866 centigrams of pure gold, and will therefore be equivalent to' forty gold dollar cents, or 19.7265 pence, or .8925 gold yen..

"

From February 1 to March 15, inclusive, the specific duties on Imports from abroad, now expres- sed in Halkwan taels, will be con- verted into the new unit on a basis of one Halkwan tael equals 1.50 of the new unit, and beginning with March 16 on a basis of one Hai- kwan inel equals 1.75 of the new

unit.

As heretofore, dollars, taels and other currencies will be received In payment of duties, and the rates at which such currencies will be necepted will be announced from time to time. At least three days' notice will be given in the event of any change of rates.-Reuter,

Permission has been given to the Motor Cyeln Section of the Hong kong Volunteer Defence Corpa to hold a motor cycle reliability trial on the lines outlined last week. Now comes Ramon Novarro and makes the novel a living, breath- ing

reality. Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer's sound synchronized filmi- zation of this famous book, photo graphed in the South Seas on the actual locales described in the story, and with Navarro as the young here, is baing shown to-day at the Queen's Theatre. It is one of Novarro's outstanding pictures and it introduces his voice to the screen. His rondition of "The Pagan Love Song," the theme song of the producton, is one of the noteworthy things that has come from the cinema sound stages,

Set amid the gorgeous scenery of the South Sens, it weaves a hauntingly dellente love romance between the island boy and girl. This romance is interspersed with thrills and sensations that could only be secured in the trople land where the picture was made. For instance, there is Novarro's fight with the shark, filmed under water, a most breath-taking piece of business and his strange adven- tures in the trackless jungle. Other thrills, a countless number, created in, a spirit of glamour and adventure, hold ons, spellbound. W. S. Van Dyke, who directed the story, used the same deft artistry that marked his "White Shadows in the South Seas," and he had

A notable cast to work with. Renee Adorse, in the role of Madge, a white adventuress, plays with a fiery intensity. Dorothy Janis, the little Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer "find," who plays the, native girl, Novarro's sweetheart, has a difficult and at the same time ap- pealing role. Donald Crisp makes a dominant figure of the white trader, nemesis and enemy of the haunting story.

Colour, pathon, thrills and ro- mance are skillfully woven to- gether in this charming tale of the Islands and such historic spots as the famous old church at Tahiti, the plantation on the island drive and various locales described in Russell's vivid book, form a remarkable background.

This is one of the best of the South Sen pictures yet made and should not be missed by anyong with a liking for the best in movie

ST. GENNY..

London, Jan. 15.
